Job Details Section Supervisor-Lab Provides oversight of the department’s operation and day-to-day supervision of testing personnel and oversees the reporting of findings/test results in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Additionally, the section supervisor must be able to perform all routine and special procedures associated with the department in a prompt, accurate and reliable manner according to established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Responsibilities: Provides oversight of the department's operation and day-to-day supervision of testing personnel and support staff. Oversees the reporting of findings/test results in accordance with established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Supervisor must be able to perform all routine and special procedures in all areas of the Laboratory. Assumes responsibility for the proper performance of all laboratory procedures and the reporting of test results in the absence of the laboratory director. Monitors test analyses and specimen examinations to ensure that acceptable levels of analytical performance are maintained. Reviews work performance of departmental employees and performs or assists in the performance evaluation process and competency assessment on a timely basis. Provides appropriate feedback of employee behavior. Demonstrates initiative with strong ability to identify, analyze and solve problems. Resolves technical problems and ensures that remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications (non-conformance event). Ensures that in the event of non-conformance, all results of test examinations are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is properly functioning. Reviews test results so as to ensure that laboratory personnel who have been authorized to release results are performing the test methods as required for accurate and reliable results. Effectively communicates with superiors, peers and subordinates (internal and external) in a professional manner. Maintains open lines of communication with staff and management, including bringing problems and non-conformities to the attention of laboratory management. Participates in the interviewing and hiring processes, assures adequate staffing and initiates and documents the performance coaching, counseling and/or progressive disciplinary actions up to and including recommending termination. Identifies training needs and verifies that all staff is trained and competent prior to independently performing testing on patient specimens. Evaluates the competency of all testing personnel and assures that staff is competent to perform test procedures independently and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently. Verifies that testing personnel are competency assessed semiannually during the first year of hire, and thereafter annually, as being competent for assigned tasks and that remedial action is performed when staff does not perform as expected. Reevaluates testing personnel's performance if test methodology or instrumentation changes. Meets regularly with staff and continuously improves staff's skills by providing continuing education, on-the-job training and/or in-services. Ensures employees are observing appropriate policies and procedures. Ensures compliance of all staff members with recommended continuing education credits and safety protocols and practices, personal protective equipment, waste disposal. Maintains accurate records and provides statistical reports on the operation of the department as needed. Prioritizes assignments and meets deadlines effectively and efficiently and ensures adequate turn-around-time of procedures and written reports. Assists in maintaining compliance with regulatory agencies. Exhibits sound leadership, troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities. Demonstrates a broad knowledge of the department, procedures and their relationship with other areas of the laboratory. Demonstrates effective leadership by developing performance standards and delegates appropriate authority to various support personnel within scope of qualifications. Exhibits compliance with safety protocols/standard precautions - proper use of PPE and safety techniques. Possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to maintain a clean, safe and organized working environment. Assists laboratory director, administrative director and/or manager with the development and implementation of new policies and procedures in accordance with New York State Department of Health, Joint Commission and Federal standards and regulatory requirements. Requirements: Current New York State Department of Education license as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist A bachelor's degree or higher in a chemical, physical or biological science or clinical laboratory technology A minimum of 6 years of pertinent clinical laboratory experience. Supervisory / administrative experience preferred. Salary Range USD $59.94 - USD $75.71 /Hr. This range serves as a good faith estimate and actual pay will encompass a number of factors, including a candidate’s qualifications, skills, competencies and experience. The salary range or rate listed does not include any bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation that may be applicable to this job and it does not include the value of benefits.
