Diageo Health & Safety Standards Manager - Process Safety in Plainfield, Illinois

Please note this is a 6 month fixed term contract

Location: UK, Ireland or North America

Purpose of the Role:

This role will be responsible for leading and implementing the company's process safety management (PSM) strategy across all global Supply sites. In addition, this role also leads fire safety management across all Diageo sites – both Supply and Demand. This role focusses on mitigation of catastrophic risks and ensures that the highest standards of safety are adhered to in order to protect employees, the environment, and company assets.

As part of the Global Health & Safety Leadership Team, the person in this role is a functional expert and will be drawn on throughout the business in this capacity. The ideal candidate will possess deep expertise in process safety management (PSM) and have a strong track record of driving safety culture in a multinational environment, particularly within a high-risk manufacturing industry. This role will be externally focused as well as internally orientated and will bring leading developments in these fields into Diageo and, with the Global Governance Director, will develop the annual and 5 year roadmaps.

The role is key to assure Diageo processes are implemented in a globally codified manner via IMPROVE programmes. You will need to drive the successful implementation, embedding and sustaining of improvement programmes at market and site level.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive global process safety management (PSM) strategy for Diageo. Functional expert in process safety and codifies best practice.

  • Establish and update global process safety standards, guidelines, and procedures.

  • Ensure alignment of process safety practices with local, regional, and global regulations and standards.

  • Support hazard identification (HAZID), hazard and operability studies (HAZOP), and other risk assessment methodologies across global operations.

  • Develop and maintain the company's global process safety risk register.

  • Oversee the investigation of process safety incidents, near misses, and other process safety-related events like precursors

  • Support root cause analysis and development of corrective actions to prevent recurrence. Share lessons learned across the organization and incorporate findings into process safety programs.

  • Conduct annual trend analysis of incidents and incorporate findings into the global process safety roadmap and strategy

  • Design and deliver global training programs on process safety for all levels of the organization.

  • Foster a process safety culture by promoting awareness and engagement across the organization.

  • Oversee process safety audit program and assessments to identify areas for improvement.

  • Benchmark process safety practices against industry standards and best practices.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the company’s process safety performance.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineering, operations, quality, and maintenance, to integrate process safety into all aspects of the business.

  • Work closely with regional and site-level EHS teams to ensure consistency and alignment in process safety practices.

  • Engage with external partners, such as regulatory bodies, industry associations, and suppliers, to stay current of process safety developments.

  • Leads elimination of Process Safety specific severe and fatal incidents in all Diageo markets / regions

  • Work in conjunction with subject matter experts throughout Diageo in a collaborative way in ideation and roadmap development

  • Review global performance monthly via safety leading and lagging indicators and ensure site interventions occur as required and ensure delivery of improvement plans to take maturity to leading, with particular focus on process safety, ensure standardisation and codification across all markets for this area.

Experience, Skills & Capabilities Required

Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent experience, in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related field.

  • A senior externally recognized Health & Safety qualification relevant to the role e.g. Certified Process Safety Professional (CCPS), Certified Safety Professional (CSP), or equivalent are preferred.

  • Extensive experience in process safety management within a manufacturing environment, preferably in food/drink, pharmaceutical or energy sectors delivering a similar programme with exposure to the following areas:

  • Safety Leadership

  • Management influencing

  • Standards development

  • Systems & procedures implementation

  • Project management

  • A preference is given to significant experience in a global or regional leadership role and/or specific experience in the area of fire safety

Essential Skills:

  • Possess a strong knowledge of global process safety regulations, standards, and best practices.

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Proficiency in process safety management software and tools.

  • Must be a standout colleague with proven leadership skills. High energy, strong work ethic with demonstrated ability to lead by example.

  • Ability to lead and develop individuals and team that are not necessarily direct reports.

  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple priority initiatives/projects simultaneously.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively engage with and influence employees throughout the organization.

  • Great at networking to establish excellent relationships at all levels. Approachable and able to provide clear and concise information.

  • Demonstrated proven ability working as a H&S professional, within a manufacturing environment

  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills across different international cultures. Ability to influence, persuade, convince. Ability to compromise, build consensus. Able to resolve conflicts.
