A Brief Overview

Under the direction of the Manager of Spiritual Care Education-CPE / ACPE Certified Educator, the Certified Educator Student (CES) or Candidate (CEC) engages in and completes the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) certification process. With progressive autonomy as approved by the current ACPE Certified Educator, the CES/CEC participates in the supervision of up to six (6) Level I and Level II Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) students.

The CES/CEC participates in at least one consortium focused on supporting CECs through the certification process

What you will do

  • Participates in the teaching and administrative functions of the CPE program as assigned in the training curriculum including but not limited to:

    • Coordinating admissions for Level I and Level II CPE units.
    • Reviewing applications and participating in interviews.
    • Preparing unit syllabus for Level I and Level II CPE.
    • Coordinating Level I and Level II CPE orientation.
    • Coordinating and participating in course instruction/didactic training.
    • Following CPE course handbook and participating in yearly updates.
    • Scheduling CPE program activities.
    • Scheduling on-call coverage in coordination with Administrative Assistant.
    • Completing evaluations for direct supervisees within 21 days of unit completion.
    • Abides by all SHC, CPE Program policies and procedures, and ACPE Standards.
    • Submitting all program material: curricula, didactic material, syllabus, assignments, unit calendar, and log sheets.
  • Takes part in the Pacific Region Community of Practice, doing preparatory reading, presenting certification-related material at each meeting, and participating fully in peer group. May participate in an additional CEC group to serve learning needs (such as Virtual SES Group or Certified Educator Formation).

  • Explores familiar and new theories to ground CPE practice in theology/values, personality theory, and education and supervision in order to build the Theory Integration Presentation.

  • Moves developmentally from the national Admissions Interview, through Phase I A and B, the Theory Integration Presentation, End of Phase I Review, Phase II, and Integration Interview.

  • Meets regularly with one’s assigned Certified Educator for individual supervision and consultation. Prepares an agenda for each session of individual supervision.

  • In Phase IB, provides educator with videotapes of all CPE components led individually by the CEC, with specific learning questions, for feedback.

  • In Phase II, consults with educator, providing videotapes to support the consultation.

  • Communicates with one’s Theory Integration Mentor and Certification Commission Reviewer regularly.

  • Writes reflection reports at least biweekly. Writes BDTIOLs [Behavior, Dynamics, Theory, Intervention, Outcome and Learning on one’s supervision of Level I/II students.

  • Writes self-evaluations every six months.

  • Creates an ACPE certification portfolio and stores all certification related process notes and materials there.

  • Grants access to one’s portfolio to one’s CPE Educators.

  • Attends area ACPE meetings, CPE Day, ACPE national meeting, and other conferences addressing the learning needs of the CEC, as calendar and budget permit.

  • Provides professional spiritual care to patients of all ages, family members and hospital staff. Respond to referrals and rounds on assigned patient units.

  • Participates in on-call rotations and is available on short notice for emergencies.

  • Provides rituals and sacramental care as appropriate and in accordance with departmental and denominational policies.

  • Shares in planning and leadership of regular services as applicable.

  • Participates in special services offered through the Spiritual Care Services department in collaboration with team members and hospital staff.

  • Consults with other health care professionals to enhance patient care.

  • Charts visits in the medical record and in departmental logs.

  • Provides educational in-services, seminars, and programs for staff as appropriate.

  • Works to increase the visibility and quality of the Department of Spiritual Care Services within the hospital community.

  • Collaborates with other departments in ministry and participates in the Spiritual Care department’s intra- and inter-hospital relationships.

  • Functions as a member of the Spiritual Care team by participating in staff activities, meetings, and maintaining close working relationships with all members of the department.

  • Performs other duties as required, assigned, or negotiated with the Manager of Spiritual Care Education- CPE and/or Director of Spiritual Care Services.

Education Qualifications

  • Completion of a graduate level degree preferably in Theology/ Divinity from an institution accredited by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and/or the Association for Theological Schools

  • Four or more of Level 1 & 2 ACPE CPE units.

  • Admission to the SHC Supervisory CPE program to pursue Certified Educator CPE.

  • Board Certified Chaplain with APC, NAJC, or NACC

Experience Qualifications

  • At least three years’ experience as a Staff Chaplain

  • Support for professional spiritual care formation by one’s spiritual/religious/ philosophical community.

  • Successful national ACPE Admissions Interview.

  • Student membership in ACPE, Preferred

  • Knowledgeable about ministry to the sick and to persons of diverse religious, educational, racial, ethnic cultural and socio-economic backgrounds

  • Ability to work well as a member of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

  • Ability to relate theology/philosophy/spiritual practices, behavioral sciences and understanding of persons to help minister to patients and families.

  • Good organizational and computer skills.

  • Commitment to reflective practice.

Base Pay Scale: Generally starting at $42.25 - $42.25 per hour

The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training. This pay scale is not a promise of a particular wage.
