Adolfson & Peterson Construction, one of the nation’s top contractors, is recruiting for an experienced Safety Coordinator for projects in our Gulf States Region. The initial project is based in Odessa.

This position will maintain AP’s safety program to ensure a safe environment for all team members. Champion the Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture and senior managements’ commitment that AP will operate in a manner that fosters and supports the IIF initiative. Provide safety trainings and communicate safety issues.

Because safety is paramount to AP and embedded into everything we do, all team members are responsible for working safely within our Incident and Injury Free culture.

Key Accountabilities for this position include:

  • Take personal responsibility for working safely within an Incident and Injury Free (IIF) culture.

  • Be a champion to support IIF efforts for working safely and building a culture of care and concern for each team member in the workplace.

  • Consistently communicate and reinforce the tenets of an IIF workplace.

  • Ensure adherence to processes and procedures that support an IIF culture.

  • Comply with all company safety requirements and policies.

  • Collaborate with other team members to implement and maintain the region’s safety program.

    • Maintain a program that encourages safe behavior for all team members and reinforces the achievement of safety goals and objectives.
  • Implement and maintain elements of the company-wide safety training program.

  • Ensure task-based training is in place for all team members on AP jobsites.

  • Provide safety and health training to all AP management and supervisory personnel.

  • Distribute new and changing safety related information and provide training when necessary.

  • Present the safety orientation program for all new team members.

  • Further the safety education of all team members whether by formal classes, seminars, workshops, or situational and spontaneous coaching.

  • Monitor the region’s safety program and communicate findings to senior management and project team members.

    • Keep regional leaders informed and up-to-date on the safety processes for projects.
  • Perform internal safety audits and inspections on projects on a random basis. Instruct and train field workers in the recognition and avoidance of unsafe conditions to eliminate hazards.

  • Work with state and federal agencies on inspections and issues identified, if any, to minimize the future impact on AP.

  • Acknowledge and recognize “safe” behaviors in a public manner to foster repetition and copying of those behaviors.

  • In coordination with leadership, oversee the worker’s compensation program.

    • Participate in quarterly claims reviews.
  • Investigate accidents.

  • Monitor the return-to-work process for injured team members to minimize the impact of an injured team member returning to a jobsite.

  • Identify light duty and other work that injured team members can perform.

  • Collaborate and assist other departments to reduce and eliminate risk.

    • Edit and keep the SDS reference books and Superintendent’s Health and Safety Manuals current. (The SDS process is a jobsite responsibility. The Health and Safety Manual is a corporate document and changes must be authorized by the National Safety Committee.)
  • Anticipate project safety needs and assist the Superintendent/Project Manager with required safety training. Monitor site safety communications to maintain training effectiveness (signage, toolbox meetings, etc.).

  • Assure that adequate, properly trained team members are available to carry out the required functions safely on a project.

  • Other duties as assigned.

    Job Requirements include:

  • History of experience and proven results including:

  • Bachelor’s degree in industrial safety, safety management, or related field and 2+ years directly related experience in field and office safety and health program management.

  • Construction industry experience preferred.

  • Experience working through inspections and audits with state and local government agencies.

  • Knowledge of state and federal safety laws and regulations.

  • Knowledge of dust control and storm water management.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office including Word and Excel.

  • Experience conducting safety trainings.

  • Currently possess or able to obtain OSHA 500 Trainer Card for the construction industry.

  • Ability and willingness to travel.

  • Willingness to work in various (sometimes extreme) climate conditions.

  • Demonstrated integrity and ethical standards.

  • Developed skills (written, oral, and listening) to effectively communicate with diverse audiences.

  • Ability to efficiently manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously under time constraints.

  • Ability to drive to the core of complex issues and provide insightful and constructive feedback.
