Space Dynamics Laboratory Space Simulation Vacuum Engineer in North Logan, Utah

The Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL), a University Affiliated Research Center, has been developing innovative technologies and solutions for cutting-edge DoD and intelligence programs for over six decades. Our expertise is in space and airborne IR, VIS, UV, and RF sensors, small satellite technologies, test and calibration, cybersecurity, data visualization and assurance, and ground stations.

The SDL Materials Process group is seeking an Entry-Level Scientist/Engineer to support a variety of tasks in support of thermal vacuum chamber operations and flight hardware handling. SDL’s thermal vacuum chamber group is responsible for the operation and maintenance of 27 space simulation thermal vacuum chambers ranging from 12cm diameter up to 3.8m diameter.

You should have the ability to work well in a research laboratory environment and manage various hands-on technical problems.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Test coordination, planning, and execution - including extensively working with program engineers and determining appropriate test configurations, integration of flight hardware into chambers, and operation of the chambers

  • Data analysis, creation and revision of technical documentation, including space simulation test plans, vacuum chamber operating procedures, maintenance plans, technical test reports, traveler entries, calibration certificates and equipment maintenance records

  • Performs real time outgassing diagnostics of flight hardware under vacuum, including operation of Quartz Crystal Microbalances and Residual Gas Analyzers

  • Coordinates and plans vacuum bakeouts of high outgassing components and materials, including development of processing guidelines for new materials to be used in flight hardware

  • Performs maintenance of high vacuum pumps and space simulation chambers

  • Supports 24/7 shift work when chambers are operating

  • Performs special materials processes such as precision cleaning of sensitive parts

    Required Qualifications:

  • BS degree in a STEM discipline

  • Excellent communication skills, written and verbal

  • Ability to learn quickly on the job and apply learned skills to daily tasks

  • Knowledgeable in MS Office, specifically Word and Excel

  • Ability to read and interpret technical schematics, drawings, and diagrams

  • Attention to detail, especially in a laboratory setting

  • Physical Requirement – ability to lift 50 lbs

  • Must be a U.S. citizen and be able to obtain a U.S. Government Security Clearance

    Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with high vacuum equipment and best practices

  • Chemistry laboratory experience

  • Familiarity with the space environment
