Title:

Postdoctoral Research Associate

Department:

Mathematical Sciences

Reports To:

Associate Professor, Mathematical Sciences

Position Type:

Staff

Position Summary:

We are seeking a postdoctoral research associate to work on a joint project between Dr. Christina Frederick (NJIT Department of Mathematical Sciences) and Dr. Yunan Yang (Cornell University Department of Mathematics). This position will be based at NJIT and will focus on research in the intersection of inverse problems, analysis, and computational mathematics.

The position is initially for one year, with the option to renew for 1-2 additional years, subject to satisfactory performance. The postdoctoral research associate will also have a courtesy visiting scholar position in the Mathematics Department at Cornell University.

The successful candidate will work on the ONR Project “Optimal Transport-based Strategies in Waves and Dynamics” led by Prof. Christina Frederick at NJIT and Prof. Yunan Yang at Cornell University. The project will harness and advance the power of optimal transport theory to capture the intrinsic characteristics of complex physical processes arising in a wide range of important scientific applications, e.g., ocean electromagnetics, inverse scattering, time series modeling. The postdoctoral associate will integrate and develop optimal transport theories and computational methods for the forward and inverse modeling in these applications.

Essential Functions:

Conducti independent research and collaborate within the Department of Mathematical Sciences at NJIT and the Department of Mathematics at Cornell University.

Prerequisite Qualifications:

  • Recent PhD in Mathematics or related field with a research background in computational mathematics, optimization, and inverse problems.

  • Track record of publications and presentations in high-quality journals and conferences.

  • At the university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may be exempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of the university, an equivalent combination of education and experience specifically preparing the candidate for success in the position.

    Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of optimal transport theory, programming skills and experience with physical modeling (e.g., computational fluid dynamics, wave propagation). Proven ability and interest interdisciplinary DMS is recognized for its strong program in mathematical sciences that offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees, with Ph.D. program tracks in Applied Mathematics and Applied Probability & Statistics. NJIT is located in the vibrant University Heights neighborhood of Newark, within the New York City metropolitan area (for more information visit math.njit.edu). DMS provides an active research environment in applied mathematics and statics with a dedicated group in wave propagation and scattering.
