City of New York Steam Fitter in New York, New York

Job Description

Under supervision, performs work on the vessels and facilities of the Staten Island Ferry, relating to installing, maintaining and repairing piping, controls and equipment for heating systems, compressed air systems, refrigerating systems, air conditioning systems, steam and hot water systems, fire suppression systems, cooling systems and sprinkler systems; performs related work.

EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL TASKS:

Responsible for installing, maintaining and repairing piping systems on ferry vessels, other floating equipment and in ferry terminals; measures cuts and neatly joins the exact lengths of pipes to assure a proper fit using appropriate tools and equipment; installs boilers, feedwater, vacuum and condensate equipment, fuel oil piping and related auxiliary equipment; lays out work from plans, specifications and/or sketches; works on CO2 system piping /bottles and HVAC systems; performs related work as assigned by the Supervisor. Performs tasks in accordance with American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) and U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulations

LICENSE REQUIREMENT: Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the state of New York is required for appointment in DOT. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment.

DRUG TESTING REQUIREMENT: Candidate must pass a drug screening to be appointed. Steam Fitters are subject to random drug and alcohol testing during their employment.

TWIC REQUIREMENT: Once selected for employment at the Staten Island Ferry, federal regulations require that the applicant must either undergo a federal background check as part of the Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) program or already possess a TWIC. The TWIC must be obtained within 30 days of appointment, and be maintained for the duration of employment. For further program information, visit: https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic.

Qualifications

  1. Five years of full-time satisfactory experience as a Steam Fitter; or

  2. Not less than two and one-half years of such experience plus sufficient full-time experience as a helper or apprentice or relevant education or training to make up a total of five years of acceptable experience. Six months of experience will be credited for each year of apprenticeship or helper experience or for each year of completed approved trade or vocational school training in the steam fitting field.

License Requirement

  1. For appointment to certain agencies, candidates must possess a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York. The license must be maintained for the duration of employment.
