Salary Range: $27.25 - $38.90

Position Summary

Responsible to general animal laboratory management. Provides maintenance of laboratory and animal housing for PI’s laboratory. This position will involve co-ordinating with other lab personnel to plan experiments, the manipulation of infected mice, and performing downstream molecular biology experiments to analyze mouse samples.

Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for handling/manipulating small laboratory animals.

  • Uses sterile techniques to collect biological samples, including blood and organ tissues.

  • Administers drug/treatment via intradermal (ID), intramuscular (IM), intravenous (IV), sub-cutaneous (SC), and/or intraperitoneal (IP) injections, and oral gavage.

  • Collects, records and verifies data such as: clinical observations, body weights, food and water consumption and overall animal colony health.

  • Produces reports such as: animal room inventories and records of experimental procedures.

  • Assists PI(s) in preparing IACUC protocal amendements and renewals.

  • Maintains clean working environment in animal rooms and stocks supplies.

  • Receives and schedules work requests from supervisors. Answers inquiries and responds to emails.

  • Provides some supervision of caretakers regarding care of animals, animal handling, collection of data and some specimens.

  • Assists in the orientation and training of new investigators, fellows, residents, and technical staff in the use of equipment, products and experimental techniques.

  • Provides working supervision to junior laboratory staff as needed.

  • Performs other related duties as directed.

Education

  • Bachelor's Degree

Experience

Approximately 2 years of related work experience within a laboratory.

Required to work under strict ABSL-2/3 environment.

Must be willing to work with human samples and infectious material, including HIV and HIV infected animals.

Must have considerable knowledge of the care and handling of laboratory animals.

Must have knowledge of the biology and physical characteristics of animals used in research and the ability to recognize signs of illness and abnormalities.

Must have knowledge regarding the methods and materials used in laboratory work.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must have the ability to work and communicate in a professional manner with investigators, supervisors and caretakers.

  • Must have ability to make accurate observations, keep current, accurate and complete records.

  • Must have ability to read, understand and interpret written and oral instruction and perform math calculations in conduct of experimental procedures.

Working Conditions/Physical Demands

Ability to sit at a desk for extended periods of time.

This job also includes significant experiment planning and execution, which requires a significant level of physical activity, including standing, walking, and occasionally lifting supply items that may weigh up to 20 pounds.

Additionally, the incumbent may be required to attend meetings in other offices, or deliver and/or retrieve information from other offices around campus.

Working environment will include a shared fully functional workspace/office with productivity resources e.g. computer, telephone, access to fax and copier.
