CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION

College Laboratory Technician, with specialization in technical direction for theatre, reports to Department Chair. The Hunter College Department of Theatre offers a BA in Theatre and an MFA in Playwriting. These programs include production activities and events in our 100-seat flexible black box theatre and studio performance spaces. The Department College Lab Technicianis responsible for supporting our production activities, working closely with the Department Chair, faculty, college staff, and students to ensure high standards of safety, professionalism, and learning, as well as managing and maintaining the production equipment in the departmental spaces.

General Responsibilities for the department include:

  • Manage and maintain all production equipment, stock, storage, and departmental performance facilities.

  • Maintenance of scene shop and equipment with the ability to operate technical equipment applicable to scenic materials and construction.

  • Maintain inventory of and track budget for supplies and materials for scene shop and production spaces in coordination with the Chair.

  • Provide care and maintenance of lighting, audio, rigging, staging, projection and production equipment and rentals.

  • Attend all faculty and production meetings of the Theatre Department.

Responsibilities as Technician on department productions include:

  • Coordinate technical schedule with Production Manager and Chair.

  • Analyze scenic, lighting, and sound design plans and develop detailed technical drawings in CAD / Vectorworks, for implementation of scenic designs.

  • Complete scenic construction in a variety of materials and work with Designer to make design work effectively within department resources.

  • Assist with supervision, training, and organization of student and professional crews and ability to ensure safety and proper use of equipment.

  • Assist with technical supervision of technical rehearsals, performances, and strike.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High School Diploma with a minimum of four years' related experience. Additional education may be used to meet the experience requirement: an Associate degree may be substituted for two years experience, and a Bachelor's degree may be substituted for four years experience.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to candidates that can demonstrate:

  • MFA/BFA/BA in Theatre preferred, or equivalent professional experience. Previous experience in technical direction and in academic theater is also preferred.

  • Ability to work independently and prioritize work to meet deadlines.

  • Adaptable, collaborative, and invested in the education of college students.

  • Evidence of professionalism in a variety of production environments with strong connections to New York theatres, shops, and related businesses.

  • Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. and willingness to assist with load-ins and load-outs, building events, sets, etc.

  • Excellent time management and ability to schedule and oversee student or professional labor in scene shop and production spaces.

  • Ability to maintain dimmers systems, cables, and computerized lighting controls, maintain lighting instruments, program lighting equipment, operate and install audio systems.

  • Ability to communicate with kindness and clarity, fostering teamwork and a collaborative environment while mentoring students and working with faculty.

  • Ability to liaise with the Department, the Office of College Facilities and Public Safety.

  • Strong Knowledge of engineering fundamentals and experience with their application to theatre.

  • Solid experience with safe, industry-standard rigging practices and hands-on experience building rigging systems.

  • Ability to prepare production budgets.

Salary commensurate with academic accomplishments and experience ($62,277- $74,430)
