The PhD-DMA Program in Music at the Graduate Center invites applications for a full-time position in Ethnomusicology at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor to begin in August 2024. The ideal candidate will have topical and regional expertise that complements the current strengths in the Ethnomusicology Program, and a record of research, teaching and publication in one or more of the following: gender/sexuality studies, race and ethnic studies, or indigenous music/sound studies. Teaching obligations will consist of doctoral-level courses in the Music Department, including core ethnomusicology classes and topical classes, and advising student dissertations.

The Ethnomusicology area of the Graduate Center’s Music Department is home to theoretically and methodologically rich scholarship on music, its social formations, and its institutional and material forms. The campus is situated in the heart of New York City: a center for classical music, opera and music theater, the jazz capital of the world, and the single biggest center for Latin popular music. The Ethnomusicology areacontinues to host research around its original focus on the musics of New York’s many ethnic, immigrant, and diasporic communities. This is aided by proximity to several key research institutions such as the Schomberg Center for Research in Black Culture, the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research, and Hunter College’s Center for Puerto Rican Studies.

This faculty position will require the incumbent to teach in person.

QUALIFICATIONS

For Assistant or Associate Professor:

Ph.D. degree in area(s) of experience or equivalent. Also required are the ability to teach successfully, demonstrated scholarship or achievement, and ability to cooperate with others for the good of the institution.

Preferred Qualifications:

• A PhD in Ethnomusicology or related field

• Proven ability to teach successfully

• Experience with MA/PhD-level teaching and thesis/dissertation supervision

• Prior experience serving on MA/PhD dissertation committees

• Topical and regional expertise that complements the current strengths in the Ethnomusicology Program

• Demonstrated experience in teaching students from diverse backgrounds

• Research, teaching and publication experience in one or more of the following: gender/sexuality studies, indigenous-led music research, or Black American/Black Atlantic/African diasporic music studies

• Experience in collaborative service roles (e.g. program or center directorship, scholarship committees)

COMPENSATION

$99,532-$117,805, the maximum salary for an Assistant Professor is $99,532 and the maximum salary for an Associate Professor is $117,805.
