Job Overview:Clinical laboratory personnel, as members of the health care delivery team, are responsible for assuring reliable and accurate laboratory test results, which contribute to the diagnosis, treatment, prognosis, and prevention of physiological and pathological conditions in humans. Quality clinical laboratory testing is evidenced by performing the correct test, on the right person, at the right time, producing accurate test results, with the best outcome, in the most cost-effective manner.

Transports blood products, specimen tubes and/or supplies to/from hospital customer Transfusion Departments, fixed sites and/or mobile operations. Performs donor medical interviews. Performs whole blood and donor apheresis procedures.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • BA/BS Degree in Medical Technology and /or related science.

  • 2 to 3 years clinical laboratory experience.

  • 2-3 years Blood Bank experience

Preferred:

  • National Certification

Essential Functions:

  • Policies and Procedures: 1. Demonstrates a clear understanding of the blood services principles, concepts policies and procedures. 2. Process blood and blood components as outlined in the Standard Operating Policy and Procedure manual. 3. Articulate effectively when communicating or addressing inquiries about blood or 4. blood component shipment status, availability for a patient or the status of donor 5. problem resolution. 6. Able to troubleshoot the cause of discrepancies. 7. Able to provide assistance to work colleagues when asked questions. 8. Able to train employees in laboratory processes as directed by the Laboratory Supervisor. 9. Skilled at recognizing blood/blood component defects starting from the collection, component preparation, labeling and distribution.

  • Daily Duties: 1. Demonstrates the ability to organize and prioritize the daily workload involving blood/blood component processing, labeling, storage and distribution a timely manner to ensure product quality. 2. Completes blood/blood component preparation, processing, labeling, storage and distribution within the established turn-around time (TAT). 3. Able to minimize blood component processing delays involving leukoreduction and labeling of products i.e. accumulation of unlabeled FFP units 4. Facilitates shipment of blood/blood components in a manner that the blood/blood components shipped on time, all labels are correct, paper work completed accurately and shipped according to specified temperature requirements. 5. Other duties as assigned including but not limited to performing medical interviews, donor registration, scheduling of donor appointments, computerized supply requisitioning, donor whole blood and donor apheresis procedures.

  • Equipment Quality Functions: 1. Demonstrates the skills and competence to ensure that all laboratory and/or blood collection equipment are maintained to function according to required specifications as 2. Monitors quality control outcomes. 3. Management of equipment malfunction and action taken to ensure no blood/blood component is compromised. 4. Functional validation after repairs. 5. Performs blood /blood component quality assessment and reviews outcomes.

  • Record Maintenance: 1. Ensures the accuracy of laboratory donor records in the BCIS and manually when necessary, serologic testing, infectious disease testing and shipping records. 2. Notifications to regulatory agencies when necessary is done expeditiously. 3. Ensures that donor information is stored in a manner so that confidentiality is maintained at all times.

  • Problem Resolution: 1. Perform and resolve technical problems as evidenced by: a. Is able to minimize blood/blood components processing delays. b. Is able to minimize blood/blood components wastage. 2. Able to initiate problem resolution, before the blood/blood component in question is shipped to contracted consignee. 3. Skilled in identifying donor related or operational problems, errors or incidents and brings the nonconformance to the attention of supervisory personnel.

  • Quality Control: 1. Performs and interprets Quality Control results accurately. 2. Identifies quality control discrepancies. 3. Ensures that blood/blood component preparation and quality control testing equipment are maintained and functioning properly. 4. Communicates identified discrepant QC testing/outcomes and equipment malfunction findings to supervisory personnel.

  • Donor Counseling: 1. Counsels donors and patients on laboratory testing, test results, and procedural information. 2. Provides pre-donation counseling to prospective apheresis donors in a thorough and sensitive manner to ensure full understanding of the procedure. 3. Exhibits friendly and helpful behavior by anticipating and responding to the donor needs and questions.
