NACOGDOCHES-CITY OF Police Officer in Nacogdoches, Texas

Position: Officer Department: Police FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Division: Patrol Pay Grade: PD1 Reports To: Patrol Supervisor

BASIC FUNCTION

Performs law enforcement duties in an assigned area during a specific period; assists ininvestigations of criminal offenses and in the apprehension of criminals. Performsenforcement duties in relation to laws and legal procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

? Patrols streets in a police car, on a bicycle, or on foot; develops and maintainsworking rapport with citizens and community leaders; checks doors and windows;examines premises of unoccupied residences or buildings, detects unusual conditions; maintains surveillance and observation for stolen cars, missingpersons, or suspects; reports dangerous or defective streets, sidewalks, trafficlights, or other hazardous conditions. ? Cooperates with members of other local, state and federal law enforcement andinvestigative agencies in the identification, location, apprehension and arrest ofoffenders and in the investigation of criminal activities. ? Operates a radio to receive instruction and information from or to reportinformation to police headquarters. ? Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domesticdisputes, loud and disruptive behavior, and other needs; completes calls bydetermining true nature of situation and taking whatever legal or persuasiveaction is warranted. ? Arrests offenders; identifies collects and preserves physical evidence; prepareswritten reports of investigative activities; testifies in court regarding investigativeactivities. ? Performs investigations of possible crimes through observation, questioningwitnesses and others in the community, gathering physical evidence; performsinvestigative tasks assigned by superior officers; arrests and processes criminalsuspects. ? Directs the scene of an investigation in the absence of a superior ranking officer. ? Investigates traffic accidents, issues traffic citations, directs traffic andparticipates in other emergency operation activities. ? Regulates and directs vehicular traffic at busy times or when traffic signalmalfunction or accidents require; maintains order at public gatherings. ? May operate a chemical breath analysis machine and speed timing equipment. ? Attends meetings, conferences, seminars and continuing education related totraining requirements. ? Provides exceptional customer service to internal and external customers. ? May participate in and speak at community meetings. ? Advises the public on laws and local ordinances; serves citations, warrants andwrits as needed. ? Prepares records and reports on daily activities. ? Remains open and responsive to consistent coaching, takes an active role inperformance planning and goal setting. ? Remains flexible in an environment by championing and embracing change. ? All other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position does not require supervisory responsibilities.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

The principles and practices of law enforcement and training, and skill in theirapplication; local, state, and federal laws; proficiency in the maintenance and operationof assigned law enforcement equipment.

TESTING: All Applicants Must be twenty-one (21) years of age at time of test

All entry-level applicants must complete and pass the standard written examination.Applicants may not take the written test more than two times in any six-month period. All entry-level applicants must complete and pass the Nacogdoches Police Department physical agility test. Contents of the test may be obtained by contacting theNacogdoches Police Department Training Coordinator. Applicants may not take thephysical agility test more than two times in any six-month period.

Capacity to effectively use and maintain various firearms. Aptitude in observation andmemory for names, faces, numbers, incidents, and places. Analyze situations quicklyand accur tely, and to determine proper course of action. Facility to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to write clear and comprehensive reports.Capability to cope with situations firmly, courteously, tactfully and with respect for therights of others; analyze situations quickly and accurately, and to determine proper course of action. Edit, spell correctly, use proper English, and make mathematicalcomputations; understand and accurately follow oral and written instructions; usegeneral office machines; work independently without constant supervision; and type.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma/GED. Must possess a valid Texas drivers license. Basic TexasCommission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE) required.

Possess 20/20vision, either corrected or uncorrected in each eye. Uncorrected vision cannot exceed20/100 in each eye. Must be free of dichromatic color blindness, night blindness and any other visual deficiencies or limitations.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly subject to hazardsassociated with law enforcement, working in both inside and outside environments, andall types of weather conditions. Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment will range from moderate to extremely loud.
