The Azure AI for Language team makes it possible for anyone to integrate high-quality natural language generation, processing and understanding (NLGPU), into their apps and services. Our products enable customers and developers (inside and outside of Microsoft) to build amazing user experiences that can understand the meaning of unstructured text and generate content in many different languages.

We are looking for a Senior Applied Scientist to join the Azure AI for Langguage Core Skills Science team. We’re searching for someone who’s passionate about transferring the state of the art in NLGPU research into actual products, and about building models that can deliver scale and performance that Azure customers need. If you care about democratizing the state of the art of NLGPU research, solving thorny technical challenges, and helping real customers, we want to talk to you.

Responsibilities

You will keep a sharp eye on the latest and greatest from the broad NLGPU research and opensource community.

•  You will develop on the state of the art of NLGPU research, and translate the research into new technologies that benefit real customers.

•  You will work with engineering and program management teams to integrate models and algorithms into production systems.

  • Drive the development and execution of cutting-edge research projects in language processing/generation/understanding area.

  • Leverage data from various sources and domains to design and implement innovative solutions that achieve rigorous metrics and address customer needs.

  • Communicate the results and impact of your research and development to senior leadership and external audiences through publications, presentations, and demos.

  • Collaborate with product groups and other stakeholders to transfer your research and development solutions to scalable and robust products and services.

  • Mentor and guide early-career scientists in the team.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related experience (e.g., statistics predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 1+ year(s) related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR equivalent experience.

  • Background in natural language processing, as demonstrated by a practical experience building complex NLGPU systems (Natural Language Processing/Generation/Understanding).

  • Stay current on trends in NLGPU, with a focus on representational learning, information extraction, coreference resolution, natural language generation, summarization, textual inference, question-answering, model interpretability and other related research.

  • Experience in developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.

  • Experience designing experiments, and you revel in answering questions with data.

Other Requirements:

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Additional or Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR Doctorate in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related experience (e.g., statistics, predictive analytics, research)

  • OR equivalent experience

  • 3+ years experience creating publications (e.g., patents, libraries, peer-reviewed academic papers).

  • Experience presenting at conferences or other events in the outside research/industry community as an invited speaker.

  • 3+ years experience conducting research as part of a research program (in academic or industry settings).

  • 1+ year(s) experience developing and deploying live production systems, as part of a product team.

  • 1+ year(s) experience developing and deploying products or systems at multiple points in the product cycle from ideation to shipping.

  • You are known for helping your colleagues succeed, whether they be your peers, your direct reports, or managers.

Applied Sciences IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
