Microsoft Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (CHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. Azure Memory and Storage Center of Excellence (AMS COE) is part of the CHIE organization focusing on Memory and Storage devices going into the cloud hardware servers. AMS provides memory and storage solutions to Azure, drives memory and storage suppliers to deliver high quality products meeting our requirements. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a strong passion for customer-focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to architect and specify memory and storage hardware solutions that optimize for quality, reliability, cost, and performance.

As a Principal Memory Hardware Engineer (HBM Memory) in the AMS Memory Team, you will apply expertise in HBM memory and AI systems to provide best-in-class support and failure analysis for Azure engineering teams as a subject-matter-expert. You will balance key criteria as you enable relevant telemetry, monitor HBM memory health, and analyze and mitigate HBM-related issues in the Azure fleet. To achieve this, you will combine skills in data analysis, hardware debugging, subject-matter expertise for HBM and related memories, and collaborate closely with other hardware and software engineers at Microsoft, memory vendors, and outside entities worldwide. In these collaborations you will prepare and present data analyses, provide recommendations, develop solutions to address problems, and define requirements that meet Microsoft’s unique needs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide senior-level HBM memory subject-matter expertise and guidance in collaboration forums.

  • Stay up-to-date on memory-related hardware, capabilities, system-level usage, and industry trends.

  • Work with memory suppliers to ensure proper tests are performed, qualification is complete, and issue debug is handled with appropriate urgency.

  • Identify and work with teams to isolate available, needed telemetry and enable analysis.

  • Identify and quantify the value of memory-related quality/reliability initiatives.

  • Pull, manipulate, and analyze available data for the purpose of debugging, trending, etc.

  • Identify and drive adoption of processes/tools to ensure positive initiative impact.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications

  • 10+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience

  • OR Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years of technical engineering experience.

  • 5+ years of industry experience working with DRAM-based memory devices.

Other Requirements

  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check.

  • This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

Preferred Requirements

  • 10+ years of DRAM-based memory industry or enterprise/cloud server experience.

  • BS (Bachelor’s degree) in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering.

  • MS (Master’s degree) in Electrical and/or Computer Engineering.

  • Experience working with HBM memory and related systems.

  • General understanding of memory faults and fault modes.

  • General understanding of memory-related RAS features.

  • Windows/Linux driver/kernel development experience (C/C++).

  • CUDA or other GPU-based programming experience.

  • Ability to work independently and collaborate with a global team.

Hardware Engineering IC5 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $133,600 - $256,800 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $173,200 - $282,200 per year.
