Atlantic Health System Exec Dir, Neuroscience Srv in Morristown, New Jersey

The Executive Director Service Line, Neuroscience is a visionary, leader whose mission is to improve patient care. This leader has strong technical knowledge of this complex clinical area and forms strong collaborations across the system.

JOB PURPOSE: In collaboration with the System Medical Director, Service Line, the Executive Director is responsible to:

  • Establish and lead the implementation of the Service Lines’ strategic direction across Atlantic Health System with System leadership to further our enterprise mission of building healthier communities through high quality, exceptional performance, growth, population health and innovation, research, and education.

  • Maintain a deep understanding of the competitive landscape and identify strategies and tactics for areas of opportunity/risk for programs and market share.

  • Establish collaborative relationships with and engage leaders and providers within the hospitals, ambulatory sites, medical group, and overall System as integral parts of the development of the Service Line.

  • Support the AHS mission of designing and delivering high quality, innovative and personalized care to build healthier communities and improve lives for patients, consumers, and caregivers.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES: In collaboration with the System Medical Director, Service Line, the Executive Director, Service Line is required to support the four pillars of Atlantic Health System’s Strategic Plan:

Performance

Atlantic Health drives to achieve outstanding Quality, Service, Team, Infrastructure and Financial goals.

  • Encourage standardization and decreased clinical variation wherever possible.

  • Stay abreast of regulatory, legal, reimbursement changes and industry trends. Establish appropriate registries, certifications, and external benchmarks.

  • Identify and evaluate Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) of Service Line.

  • Communicate regularly with partners and stakeholders, engaging in collaborative decision making, and fostering alignment.

  • Ensure timely implementation of organizational initiatives throughout the Service Line, and that the Service Line leadership team integrates improvement goals and programs into operations.

  • Work collaboratively as a “Team of Teams” with other Service Lines, creating joint patient- and family-centered services and sharing best practices, achievements, and challenges.

  • Eliminate silo thinking and promote multidisciplinary and System focus to support unique needs of each region.

  • Develop, execute, and achieve Service Line strategic business plans, earnings, and margin targets to support growth and investments within agreed-upon timelines.

  • Evolve care management capabilities for new payment models.

  • Analyze and interpret financial reports across the Service Line.

  • Maintain excellent physician/nurse/employee engagement as a core tenant of programmatic planning.

  • Build trust and community among physicians, Advanced Practice Providers, and other clinical and administrative staff.

  • Communicate with site chairs and employed and voluntary staff to plan and implement services with employed and independent physicians, stressing inclusion as a care coordination strategy.

Growth

Atlantic Health measures its success through the number of unique lives it touches in the communities it serves, retention of patient relationships and revenue growth.

  • Develop, communicate, and implement a data-driven short- and long-term Service Line growth strategy with a capital plan that supports overall AHS enterprise strategy and budget.

  • Lead complex projects including affordability analyses of medical and pharmaceutical expenses to reduce the total cost of care.

  • Establish System-wide market-specific strategies, service offerings, and clinical programs, coordinating with market leaders, Business Development and Physician Enterprise with support from Planning, Finance, Marketing and Ambulatory services.

  • Maintain a System view of service rationalization, connecting the dots between market needs and resources across the organization.

  • Collaborate and partner on initiatives for programmatic growth, physician recruitment, alignment, or acquisitions.

  • Develop, review, and track the operational and capital budgets relevant to the Service Line.

  • Partner with the AHS philanthropic team and respective foundations to support annual fundraising/giving goals to raise capital and identify larger gifts for Service Line projects.

  • Build Service Line infrastructure to support care, people, and outcomes.

Population Health

Atlantic Health is dedicated to creating access and affordability by leaning into value-based programs.

  • Establish Service Line’s focus and direction regarding models of care that incorporate needs of all lines of business, focusing on quality and operational efficiencies across the System.

  • Participate in the development of an integrated care delivery system and ensure compliance with chronic care, complex care, and discharge planning processes.

  • Focus on disease prevention, in all regions, ensuring the overall health and wellness of our patient populations.

Innovation, Medical Education and Research

Atlantic Health fosters a culture of innovation, a legacy of training physicians for the future, and advancing science for its patients.

  • Build and maintain internal and external strategic partnerships with community, political and business leaders, local healthcare organizations and foundations to achieve strategic imperatives.

  • Create innovative solutions, care redesign, and process enhancements to drive financial and quality achievements across the System.

  • Ensure exceptional experience for patients, families, and consumers, assisting in driving the System-wide effort to meet demand and consumer expectations (e.g. digital connectivity) in a cost-effective manner.

  • Lead and support research, education, and training opportunities to promote a culture of continuous learning and discovery within the health system.

  • Identify and coordinate non-clinical technology, software, and equipment needs in support of the Service Line.

  • Hospital Presidents and other entity leadership

  • AMG Leadership

  • Other Service Line Medical and Executive Directors

  • Planning and Strategy Leadership

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree required

  • Master's Degree in health or hospital administration/business administration preferred.

  • Minimum 5-7 years of progressive senior management experience as in a highly-matrixed healthcare system, preferably with mature service lines

  • Experience working with value-based care models, care transformation, and strategic growth

  • Demonstrated experience in achieving financial and operational results

  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency with Continuous Process Improvement methodology

COMPETENCIES:

  • Communicates effectively/skillfully with ability to work with all disciplines and levels of professionals within a large multi-specialty organization

  • Ability to think “System” and maintain high-level view in prioritizing initiatives

  • Ability to develop strategies and grow programs that are consistent with the System Strategic Plan and Budget and focus on building a more integrated system

  • Ability to collaborate effectively and work efficiently from idea to completion with clinicians and administrative staff

  • Ability to establish meaningful relationships with Service Line stakeholders and ensure clear and consistent communication throughout the System

  • Ability to support and develop site and regional leadership teams to reach our goals and continually identify ways to improve

  • Ability to deal with ambiguity, manage risk, and cope effectively with change

  • Deep understanding of the service line and market dynamics, including identification of potential market disruptors and market opportunities

  • Demonstrated ability to balance transitioning risk-based reimbursement and fee-for-service environments

  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative clinical delivery systems

  • Demonstrated ability to develop innovative educational and research programs

  • Demonstrated ability to lead in an environment of rapid change

  • Focus on patient outcomes and ability to track and work with clinical team to set clear expectations for quality priorities across the system
