JOB SUMMARY

  • Performs duties necessary to provide safe, courteous, and efficient transport of patients, equipment, supplies, and specimens to and from patient care areas within the hospital.

JOB DUTIES

  • Actively demonstrates the organization’s mission and core values and conducts oneself at all times in a manner consistent with these values.

  • Knows and adheres to all laws and regulations pertaining to patient health, safety and medical information.

  • Provides safe, timely and courteous transportation of Saint Joseph Health System (SJHS) patients and equipment to and from patient care areas.

  • Demonstrates excellent customer service skills when communicating with patients, staff, and physicians.

  • Communicates with nursing units and patient care areas. Assesses, with nursing or patient care department input, the most appropriate method and timeline for transportation of the patient.

  • Identifies the correct patient for transport and ensures that any unique requirements of the patient are identified prior to transport. Follows procedures for use of patient pumps or other any other relevant equipment necessary during transport of the patient.

  • Effectively communicates transport status, including delays, with patient care departments and nursing units.

  • Consistently uses Universal Precautions with all patients. Takes appropriate additional precautions for patients in fall precautions, isolation precautions, etc.

  • Ambulates or assists with transfer activities on the nursing unit and in patient care departments, utilizing proper equipment and safety techniques.

  • Observes and reports symptoms, reactions, and changes in the general physical and emotional condition of patients while transporting to and from patient care departments and Nursing units.

  • Provides a clean, calm, safe, quiet environment. Cleans wheelchairs and carts after each transport, utilizing hospital approved disinfectant spray or sanitized wipes.

  • Properly maintains, operates, and stores oxygen cylinders. Ensures that portable oxygen equipment is properly functioning and assists with transition to wall oxygen whenever appropriate.

  • Maintains proper supply of patient gowns and disposes of soiled linen in patient care departments and nursing units.

  • Ensures that patient care equipment is intact and working appropriately. Reports any malfunctions or equipment in disrepair in order for them to be fixed.

  • Assists patient care departments and nursing units with completion of duties as requested.

  • Demonstrates flexibility in staffing and scheduling requirements to meet patient care needs.

  • Assists in the orientation of new staff members as requested.

  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and educational offerings.

  • Updates skills and knowledge continuously. Maintains CPR certification.

  • Performs other duties consistent with purpose of job as directed.

  • Ability to identify problems and changes in patient's presentation. Must be competent to summon appropriate help and act quickly in emergencies with CPR if necessary.

  • The ability to assess the patient's condition and assist the nursing unit or patient care area to decide on the proper mode of transportation.

  • Knowledge of principles of body mechanics.

  • Knowledge of methods of maintaining a safe, working environment.

  • Ability to perform as a team member, supporting a patient focused environment in all interactions with patients, families, visitors and volunteers.

  • Assigned hours within your shift, starting time, or days of work are subject to change based on departmental and/or organizational needs.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES

Education: The level of knowledge ordinarily acquired through the completion of high school level courses.

Licensure: CPR certification upon hire, or able to attain within 30 days.

Experience: Experience working with patients in a healthcare setting is preferred.
