Using this approach, we aim to utilize unique, interdisciplinary and cooperative efforts to help all bees. These employees will work with the UMN Bee Lab's Bee Squad. These positions will require the planning and facilitating the Bee Squad's community education and outreach programs, and the teaching and mentoring of individuals and groups about beekeeping. These positions will require work with stinging insects and the ability to manage honey bee colonies independently. Interaction with Bee Squad customers will include beekeeping mentoring and general honey bee education. Major Areas of Accountability (with percentages): 50 % Beekeeping Education & Mentoring 35% Technical support for Bee Lab and Bee Squad projects (including honey extraction, equipment maintenance, data collection and note-taking) 10% Outreach 5% Native Bee Training Regular, Ongoing Tasks Performs effective management of honey bee colonies in the Bee Squad and Bee Lab research and outreach programs Provides technical support for Bee Lab and Bee Squad programs (honey extraction, data collection, equipment maintenance) Teaches beekeeping skills to individuals and groups through demonstrations and classes. Serves as a liaison between the University of Minnesota Bee Lab and the public, including keeping abreast of current events and research. Implements programming focused on pollinators, education, and sustainability. Identifies funding sources for Bee Squad projects Schedules and organizes Bee Squad events and appointments. Communicates with Bee Squad customers. Receive training on native bee identification. Supervision These employees will be accountable to the Bee Squad Program Director. Additionally, employees will act as lead worker or instructor for certain Bee Squad programs, and may plan or schedule work, train and instruct, or develop new programs and opportunities for pollinator education and promotion of healthy bees. Qualifications Required Qualifications BA/BS with at least two (2) years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal six (6) years. Beekeeping experience per the University of MN Bee Lab's Beekeeping in Northern Climates management courses. Experience with beekeeping equipment and maintenance. Experience educating the public about honey bees and training new beekeepers. Ability to speak in front of groups of all ages about beekeeping, lead classes, and manage multi-faceted pollinator-education projects. Preferred Qualifications Excellent written and verbal communication skills. A familiarity and/or willingness to learn about pollinator plants and native pollinators.
