The Department of Pathology - Blood Bank is currently seeking a full time Clinical Laboratory Assistant to work in Miami, FL. The Clinical Laboratory Assistant 1 performs a variety of routine duties in assisting technical and professional personnel in clinical and research laboratories. An employee in this position provides broad support for the laboratory operations.

CORE JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Identifies, handles, and accessions patient samples requiring laboratory testing.

  • Transport’s specimens and communicates test results timely and accurately.

  • Maintains required laboratory files and logs system in a neat and accurate manner.

  • Performs specimen processing, such as centrifugation, aliquoting, and volume measurement.

  • Maintains adequate inventory level as per protocol.

  • Participates in the performance improvement processes for the department.

  • Maintains assigned work area in a clean and orderly condition.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all patient information according to federal and state guidelines and regulations.

  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.

CORE QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

High School diploma or equivalent

Experience:

Previous medical/lab or production experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

  • Previous medical/lab or production experience is preferred.

  • Comfortability with handling biological specimens

  • Ability to accurately identify specimens.

  • Ability to sit and or stand for extended periods of time.

  • Basic computer knowledge and data entry skills

  • High level of attention to detail with the ability to prioritize and multitask.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced production environment and meet established turn-around times.

  • Strong communication skills: both written and verbal.

  • Skill in completing assignments accurately and with attention to detail.

  • Ability to analyze, organize and prioritize work under pressure while meeting deadlines.

  • Ability to process and handle confidential information with discretion.

  • Ability to work evenings, nights, and weekends and overtime, as necessary.

  • Commitment to the University’s core values.

  • Ability to work independently and/or in a collaborative environment.

Department Specific Functions

  • Follow all Standard Operating Procedures to ensure safety and quality standards.

  • Receive and sort clinical lab specimens as received using Laboratory Information System (Sunquest).

  • Prepare specimens for testing and analysis.

  • Scan and/or data entry of specimen and patient information

  • Ensure all lab equipment is working properly and perform minor instrumentation maintenance.

  • Troubleshoot any specimen related issues.

  • Replenish test bench supplies as needed.

  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment.

  • Responsible for performing reagent and consumable inventory as directed.

  • Respond to telephone result inquires.

  • can be asked to work under sterile hood to prepare media tubes for sample collection.

  • Complete record logs and other administrative duties as requested by supervisor.
