Performs semi-skilled installation, maintenance, and repair work on water distribution and treatment systems; performs related work as required.

Summary: The primary function of an employee in this class is to perform semi-skilled installation, maintenance, inspection, and repair work on the City water distribution and treatment systems. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Distribution Superintendent. The primary duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment that may include working in adverse weather conditions, hazards involving the use of power tools and equipment, as well as exposure to hazardous materials. The work requires this employee to be on-call 24/7 for emergencies. The employee must perform all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety policies.

Essential Job Functions:

On an assigned shift, operates pumps, control panels, chlorinators, dry and liquid chemical feeders, filters and other water plant equipment and run routine laboratory analysis.

Regulates addition of such chemicals such as chlorine, coagulants, and polymers to water as necessary; keeps records of amount of chemicals added to the water.

Makes periodic rounds of plant checking level gauges and flow meters; maintains logs of plant operations.

Checks, lubricates, and repairs pumps, air compressor, emergency generators, and other plant and distribution equipment.

Cleans, paints, and otherwise repairs the general physical properties of the plant, intakes, and booster stations; maintains grounds, including snow removal.

Conducts laboratory tests to ensure water quality guidelines are being met.

Fields public inquiries regarding water quality, taste and odor concerns.

Assists in reading meters

Assist in repairing meters and remote reading devices.

Checks and thaws all fire hydrants, valves and valve boxes; receives training in and performs routine maintenance work on hydrants and valve boxes as directed; keeps records on all work done.

Assists in general maintenance and repair of pumps and pumphouses equipment.

Assists in excavating for and locating line breaks; assists in repair and replacement of water mains, fire hydrants, valves and valve boxes as required.

Operates a variety of light and heavy equipment including, but not limited to, generators, loaders, backhoes and trucks in the operation and maintenance of water distribution system and related system grounds.

Performs related work as required.

Be physically present in attendance at the worksite.

The nature of this position requires the ability to respond to emergencies in a timely fashion. The position residency shall be such that when the employee is notified of an emergency, the safe and prudent driving time to the water treatment plant shall be within 30 minutes of notification.

Peripheral Job Duties:

On-call rotation for treatment and distribution system after regular work hours to respond to emergency situations;

Performs other related duties as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of:

The proper methods of repairing, lubricating, and maintaining mechanical equipment.

Some knowledge of the principles, practices, equipment, and methods used in water distribution, treatment and pumping operations.

Some knowledge of the occupational hazards connected with water plant and related activities and of necessary safety precautions.

Ability to:

Maintain, repair, and adjust water pumps, chemical feed machines, and other water plant and distribution equipment.

Read and interpret system technical and operational manuals and guidelines

Learn and understand the hazards and the safety precautions common to excavations.

Learn, understand, and apply applicable work methods and materials.

Perform moderately heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time in all types of weather.

Operate motor driven and hydraulic equipment.

Work according to a prescribed routine and to remain alert through long periods of time.

Take accurate readings, to keep routine records, and to make arithmetic computations.

Operate specialized equipment appropriate to assigned inspection, maintenance, and repair duties;

Operate standard office equipment, including a personal computer and applications appropriate to assigned duties;
