Trinity Health Patient Care Specialist - Emergency Department - Part Time in Mason City, Iowa

Description:

Position Purpose:

The ED Patient Care Specialist provides care to patients in the ED under the supervision of the registered nurse. This care focuses primarily on personal hygiene, nutritional needs, and activities of daily living. The ED Specialist performs receptionist, secretarial, housekeeping, and restocking duties and serves as communication liaison in the department. With excellent customer service skills, the ED Patient Care Specialist performs sterile and non-sterile specimen collection (phlebotomy and straight catheterizations) upon the completion of skill competency validation in accordance to MercyOne North Iowa policy and procedure guidelines.

What you will Do:

  • Assists with patient’s physical, psychosocial, environmental, spiritual, social and education needs and supports the patient's plan of care throughout patient’s stay.

  • Effectively communicates pertinent patient changes/conditions to the Registered Nurse and multidisciplinary team to achieve desired patient outcomes, and documents in the electronic/paper medical record in an accurate/timely manner.

  • Provides for patient comfort, safety, and protects dignity, privacy and confidentiality.

  • Communicates with internal/external customers/colleagues in a courteous, positive, empathic and professional manner, and accepts assignments willingly.

  • Attends and participates in departmental/organizational meetings, in-services and educational opportunities. Department meeting attendance requirement: 80% with 50% in person if department meetings are available by webinar

24 hours weekly

Minimum Qualifications:

Education:

  1. High school diploma or equivalent is required.

AND one of the following:

  1. Successful completion of formal Nurse Aid course/training verified through transcript or original program certificate of complete, required.

OR

  1. Currently enrolled in an A.D.N., B.S.N., program with successful completion of first semester of A.D.N. program; OR first year completion of nursing courses in BSN; OR

Graduate of an A.D.N., Diploma, BSN; MA, Surgical Tech or LPN program; OR EMS, or EMT.

OR

  1. Registered on State of Iowa Nurse Aide registry listing as “Active” or eligible, preferred.

Experience:

  1. Nursing Assistant experience preferred

  2. Basic computer skill required.

  3. Previous blood drawing is preferred.

  4. Medical terminology training or proficiency preferred.

Special Skills and Competencies:

  1. Ability to prioritize multiple orders or requests in a rapid and accurate manner in order to provide timely service to all patients.

  2. Must have excellent customer service skills.

  3. Must have the ability to communicate effectively with other hospital personnel and patients

  4. Must be able to work independently and follow through on assignments with minimal direction.

  5. Understands that errors may have serious consequences for patients.

  6. Must be able to read, write and/or speak English.

  7. Completes the following mandatory courses (check all that apply):

*Must provide proof of Basic Life Support (BLS Provider-American Heart Association or Professional Rescuer-American Red Cross) prior to employment or within 60 days of hire and maintains current status.

*Must provide proof of Mandatory Reporting for Child and Dependent Adult Abuse training prior to employment or within 6 months of hire and maintain current status per State of Iowa guidelines
