West Virginia Employer Orchard Laborer in Martinsburg, West Virginia

24 Temporary Orchard Workers need from 7/01/2024 - 10/25/2024. Wages: 15.14/hr; Piece rate: $0.65/per 3/4 bushel bags picked, a minimum 22 bags. The job REQUIRES 3 months recent verifiable experience working in an orchard picking tree fruit by hand. The primary job tasks are picking peaches and apples and sorting and packing fruit in the packing shed. Lower branches are picked from standing on the ground. Ladders up to 22 feet long and weighing up to 50 pounds are used to pick upper branches. Must be able to move ladder throughout the orchard. Picked fruit is placed in a picking bucket. Filled buckets, weighing up to 60 pounds, are emptied into bulk bins. Fruit will be packed and sorted in the packing shed. All fruit must be handled with care to avoid bruising. Hand tools such as shovels, trowels, hoes, tampers, pruning hooks and shears may be used. Duties may include hand thinning the different crops, pruning, weeding, removing problem vines, and general orchard clean-up. Must be physically able to lift 75 pounds on a consistent basis throughout the day. Workers must be able to perform manual as well as mechanized activities with accuracy and efficiency. There may be exposure to extreme weather conditions, pesticides, and allergens. Work hours will be Mon.-Fri. 7:00am-2:30pm and Saturday 7-12. Hours may be adjusted due to weather and crop conditions. Applicant must have documents to complete an I-9 Employment Eligibility Certificate. Free and convenient cooking and kitchen facilities are available at the employer-provided housing. Housing is stocked with cooking equipment. Workers will be responsible for purchasing their own food. Free transportation to town for groceries will be provided at least once per week via the company owned van for those who qualify to occupy employer owned housing. Transportation will be provided at no charge for employees who qualify to reside in employer-provided housing Transportation will be from the housing to the job site and return in an employer-owned, 12-passenger van which will be driven by a licensed driver and is insured by the employer's liability insurance policy. T In general, the workers will be picked up at the housing location at 7 a.m. and returned to the housing at 2:30 p.m. Agricultural work schedules can vary on a daily basis due to crop conditions and weather. Workers will be notified as soon as practicable of any changes to the daily work schedule which will in turn necessitate a change to the transportation schedule. Inbound transportation for US workers will be by any method the worker chooses and will be reimbursed to the worker by cash or check for reasonable costs incurred by the worker for transportation and daily subsistence from the place from which the worker has come to work for the employer. Inbound transportation is provided by chartered bus service for H2A workers from Mexico to West Virginia. The employer pays the carrier directly for the cost of transportation for each worker. Workers will be reimbursed by cash or check for daily subsistence incurred while travelling to West Virginia. Cash or check payment is provided to each worker (whether US or H2A) for outbound transportation and subsistence. The workers may choose any method of transportation that they wish. The amount provided to each worker for outbound transportation is based on the current rate of a common carrier bus ticket to the place from which the worker came to work for the employer.
