Job Description:

JOB SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse functions as a vital member of the healthcare team who contributes to the success of Marshfield Clinic Health System by demonstrating customer/patient focus, effective communication, professionalism and self-development, and teamwork. S/he utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate comprehensive care provided to selected patient populations and their families. This individual demonstrates excellent clinical, problem-solving, interpersonal, and leadership skills, and makes decisions consistent with Marshfield Clinic Health System policies, department protocols/guidelines, and the Wisconsin Nurse Practice Act.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION

For positions requiring education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, educational qualifications must be from an institution whose accreditation is recognized by the Council for Higher Education and Accreditation.

Minimum Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

EXPERIENCE

Minimum Required: None

Preferred/Optional: Two years nursing experience.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES

The following licensure(s), certification(s), registration(s), etc., are required for this position. Licenses with restrictions are subject to review to determine if restrictions are substantially related to the position.

Minimum Required:

  • Current State of Wisconsin Registered Nurse License or Nurse Compact License.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) within three months of hire.

  • Additional department-specific certifications, licenses, or memberships may be required (varies by department/location).

  • Affiliated staff privileges at associated hospital may be required (varies by department/location).

Preferred/Optional: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification awarded by the American Heart Association (AHA) at time of hire.

RN PULMONARY JOB DUTIES

  1. Triage of phone calls to assess urgent needs/symptoms by patients.

2 SDA office visit vs urgent care/ER vs phone treatment.

  1. Responding to patients via ecomm question or concerns. Communicating results of testing to patients (i.e., labs) and being able to explain findings if needed. Injections (influenza, pneumococcal), steroids. Instruction of patient administered biologics, monitoring of first dose. Process DME paperwork, DMV forms, disability forms. Rooming patients, answering phones. Refill medications as appropriate. Education for invasive procedures (i.e., bronchoscopies). Screening of referrals for timeliness and appropriate testing has been completed. Completion of prior authorizations for medications.

RN SLEEP MEDICINE JOB DUTIES

  1. Coordinates follow-up for department patients on opioid medications to ensure that appropriate follow-up is completed per Marshfield Clinic Health System policy. The follow-up consists of urine drug screen monitoring, EKGs, completion of medication treatment agreements, and MEDD calculations are performed and opioid antagonist prescriptions are supplied when indicated per the Controlled Substances (Opioid) Guideline/ Recommendation.

  2. Assists providers with monitoring drug screen results in Results Manager and follows up with patients. Abnormal results are reviewed with the provider and the patient is contacted regarding any change in the plan of care.

  3. Obtains prior authorizations and works with the interdisciplinary team to provide options to patients if the authorization is denied.

  4. Utilizes the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate comprehensive patient care.

  5. Performs clinical procedures in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and protocols, and as directed/ordered by provider. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • Adhering to privacy and patient confidentiality standards at all times.

  • Assisting providers with exams, tests, procedures, patient communications, etc.

  • Performing symptom-based triage; coordinating a plan of care with patients after consultation with the provider.

  • Performing specialized or department-specific nursing functions as educationally prepared.

  1. Safely and efficiently reviews and authorizes prescription renewal requests for patients within the context of the Marshfield Clinic Prescription Renewal Protocol, the Marshfield Clinic Controlled Substances (Opioid) Guideline/Recommendations, the Opioid Resource Guide, and the CDC Guidelines for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain.

  2. Assists providers with patient questions, follow-up phone calls and results, review provider recommendations and assist with scheduling patients.

  3. Critical thinking skills, effective problem solving, ability to work independently, excellent communication skills (with all members of the multidisciplinary team), and team participation skills will be called upon for this position.

  4. Explains treatment regimens to patient/family after having discussed with the physician.

  5. Identifies opportunities to improve services, making recommendations and implementing actions as appropriate and consistent with the goals of the Sleep Medicine Department
