What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Scientist 2/3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

We are looking for a software assurance lead in the Nuclear Weapons Cyber Assurance Laboratory (NWCAL). The NWCAL software assurance lead will have broad expertise or unique knowledge, use skills to contribute to development of objectives and principles and to achieve goals in creative and effective ways. You will develop advanced concepts, techniques, and standards based on professional principles and theories and is viewed as expert in the field within the Laboratory. The scientific lead works on unusually significant, unique, or complex programmatic issues, provides solutions that are highly creative and where analysis of situations or data requires an evaluation of intangibles. You will have impact on success of future concepts, products, or technologies. You will be responsible for maintaining and implementing a host of software assurance processes, tools, and procedures and have a background in the broad deployment of applications. You will collaborate with academia, NNSA, NSA and other labs and plants in scientific research endeavors.

Scientist 2: $101,700 - $168,200

After initial onboarding and training, the successful candidate will use their expertise to accomplish the following job activities:

• Research, analyze, develop, implement, and test software assurance solutions, tools, and techniques that leverage NWCAL resources and partnerships to carry out the weapons mission at LANL.

• Research, evaluate, build, recommend tooling to enhance software assurance capabilities (software component analysis, software bills of material analysis and generation, static code analysis, dynamic behavior analysis, differential analysis, program understanding, securing CI/CD pipelines).

• Work as part of a larger team and integrate new areas of focus into current processes and procedures providing technology assurance services to the LANL Weapons program.

• Work closely with external DoD and NNSA partners to establish and resource new capabilities within WRS.

Scientist 3: $ 122,300 - $ 206,300

In addition to what was outlined above at the Scientist 3 level, one or more of the following job duties are consistent with the higher scientist level:

• Collaborate with project leadership and team leadership to propose and lead in the effort to grow LANL's software assurance capability and talent pipeline.

• Collaborate, guide, influence a multi-site effort to provide a comprehensive software assurance capability to the Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE).

• Help NWCAL leadership establish the technical direction and roadmap to meet strategic long-term program goals.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Technical Knowledge

For this role, you will need to have an advanced knowledge of Linux. You will also need experience working with imperative and object-oriented programming languages such as C, C++, Rust, Haskell, Pascal. This includes experience working with interpreted programming languages such as Bash and Python. You must have experience troubleshooting and working with software compilers and linked libraries. You will need experience establishing and supporting solutions to support software development projects. You will also need experience supporting software development infrastructure for multiple development teams and establishing and managing code repositories for production development efforts. This will also include experience in web server administration and web application development.

Leadership

Leadership and experience in identifying, promoting, and developing appropriate technical capabilities to address internal gaps, and assist customers close their technical gaps. This includes influencing and establishing internal strategies to ensure alignment of new programs to the priorities and mission of NWCAL. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience working independently with minimum supervision, as well as effectively as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment. The candidate will demonstrate advanced knowledge and of networks, data management, security, software development, and systems programming technologies, how they inter-operate, and how to design and develop complex solutions. The successful candidate will be able to represent LANL on a core team consisting of other national labs, plants, and sites software assurance centers, and effectively collaborate as a member of a distributed team.

Communication

This position requires comprehensive technical writing skills and overall strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills including interacting effectively with all levels of management, staff, and customers. Demonstrated ability to actively participate in professional activities at a national level.

Additional Job Requirements for Scientist 3:

• Advanced knowledge and proven ability in one or more technical research and development disciplines.

• Proven ability in formulating and presenting results to technical audiences and readerships.

• Leadership and experience mentoring junior and mid-career staff in both technical and career directions.

• Demonstrated ability to build, maintain, and lead small teams of scientists.

Education/Experience at Scientist 2: This position requires a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or a related degree in a STEM Field, from an accredited college or university and 4 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at Scientist 3: This position requires a master's degree in computer science, software engineering or a related degree in a STEM field, from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

• Knowledge about working in classified and unclassified computing environments.

• Experience working with Gitlab, including CI/CD features, where secure configurations and "need to know" must be enforced.

• Knowledge about scientific software development

• Advanced Linux systems knowledge administration

• Understanding of the Weapons Program and US National Security Enterprise (NSE)

Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
