Los Alamos National Laboratory Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional (Industrial Hygiene & Safety Prof 1/2) in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 1 or the Industrial Hygiene & Safety Professional 2 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Associate Laboratory Directorate for Environment, Safety, Health and Quality, (ALDESHQ) has a need for an Industrial Hygiene and Safety (IHS) Professional supporting LANL programs and projects at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) through the LANL Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Division. Reporting to the OSH-ISH Safety services Team Lead the IHS Professional will be responsible for serving as subject matter expert for multiple safety programs, such as excavation safety, penetrations, machine safeguarding, program development, etc. Responsibilities will include reviewing IHS program documentation, ensuring the program(s) meets DOE and OSHA requirements, providing guidance and interpretations to program customers. In addition, the IHS professional will complete walkdowns as needed, and seek collaboration with program customers on program changes and management. Further, the IHS Professional will promote safety, security, and quality in all work activities; exercise prudent fiscal and property management; promote teamwork within the OSH organization and across the Laboratory; promote a positive work environment; and deliver exceptional customer service. IH&S Professional 1 ($69,500 - $110,300)

An IH&S Professional 1 works primarily under supervision and follows established directions and receives detailed instructions on new projects or assignments. Work is reviewed for accuracy, soundness of judgment and overall adequacy. They use judgment within defined practices and procedures to determine appropriate action.

The successful candidate will:

  • Possesses excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively within a team environment and provide excellent customer service.

IH&S Professional 2 ($83,900 - $136,600)

An IH&S Professional 2 works under limited direction; receives general instructions on new assignments. Work is evaluated upon completion to ensure objectives have been met. They demonstrate good judgment in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining solutions. They determine an approach to solutions, plans, schedules and arranges their own activities in accomplishing objectives.

In addition to the duties outlined above, the IH&S Professional 2 will be required to:

  • Use professional concepts and Laboratory objectives to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Basic knowledge of DOE and/or regulatory requirements related to industrial hygiene.

  • Basic knowledge of industrial hygiene and safety-related risk assessments and corrective actions, techniques/instrumentation, sample analysis, and selection/implementation of controls.

  • Basic knowledge and ability to apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards while ensuring mission success.

  • Experience and skill in the preparation and communication of industrial hygiene technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Experience working effectively in a team environment and ability to take direction until fully qualified.

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q clearance.

Additional Job Requirements for higher level title:

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:

  • Working knowledge and experience with unique health and safety hazards.

  • Experience and understanding of qualification standard development.

  • Demonstrated high degree of attention to detail in ensuring data quality objectives.

  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and accomplish tasks with limited supervision.

Education/Experience at lower level:

Position typically requires a Bachelor of Science degree in a technical field or a combination of education and experience.

Education/Experience at higher level:

A Bachelor of Science degree in a technical discipline and a minimum of five years of related experience or equivalent combination of relevant education and professional-level experience.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Active DOE Clearance

  • Working knowledge of Laboratory organizations, operations, and activities, programs.

  • Knowledge and application of Integrated Safety Management (ISM), Integrated Work Management (IWM), and other DOE industrial hygiene and safety procedures in a research and production environment.

  • Broad knowledge of Laboratory organizations, operations and activities.

  • Familiarity with OSH data collection tools and databases.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation): Depth perception, binocular vision, reading vision, ability to speak, ability to discriminate speech, ability to hear in a normal range (500 to 3000 hz), standing, walking, use stairs, fixed ladders and ladders up to six feet, ability to lift 50 pounds and carry 35 pounds.

Work Environment: Ability to wear personal protective equipment.

Work Schedule: Weekly work schedule will be 9/80, Monday through Thursday 9 hour days, 80 hours total every two weeks, every other Friday off, and 8 hours on your work Friday.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
