Los Alamos National Laboratory Industrial Hygiene and Safety Professional 2/3 in Los Alamos, New Mexico

What You Will Do

Reporting to the Industrial Safety and Hygiene (ISH) Core Programs Team Leader, the Safety Professional is responsible for developing, recommending, and implementing safety programs and procedures associated with the recognition, evaluation, and control of potential safety hazards. The Safety Professional will provide daily safety support to programmatic and facility organizations along with deployed Safety Professionals to ensure the protection of workers, and compliance with Laboratory safety requirements. The Safety Professional will use safety concepts to resolve complex issues in creative and effective ways. The Safety Professional is responsible for collaborating with the work force and developing solutions to complex safety problems that may require in-depth analysis of work activities. The Safety Professional will promote safety, security, and quality in all operations; exercise prudent fiscal and property management; promote teamwork within the organization and across the Laboratory; promote a positive work environment; work toward continuous safety program improvement; and deliver exceptional customer service. What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Industrial Hygiene and Safety Professional 2 ($83,900-$136,600)

  • Working knowledge of and experience implementing safety risk assessments and corrective actions.

  • Working knowledge in the identification, application, and interpretation of federal codes, standards, and regulations.

  • Working knowledge and experience in several safety program areas such as; LOTO, cranes, construction, fall protection, excavation, forklifts, machine safeguarding, and other safety areas.

  • Basic skills in the preparation and communication of safety technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Working knowledge and ability to apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards while ensuring mission success.

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively within a team environment and provide excellent customer service.

Industrial Hygiene and Safety Professional 3 ($101,700-$168,200)

  • Advanced knowledge of and experience implementing safety risk assessments and corrective actions.

  • Advanced knowledge in the identification, application, and interpretation of federal codes, standards, and regulations.

  • Advanced knowledge and experience in several safety program areas such as; LOTO, cranes, construction, fall protection, excavation, forklifts, machine safeguarding, and other safety areas.

  • Advanced skill in the preparation and communication of safety technical information to technical and non-technical personnel.

  • Advanced knowledge and ability to apply the hierarchy of controls to eliminate or mitigate hazards while ensuring mission success.

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to work effectively within a team environment and provide excellent customer service.

Education/Experience for Industrial Hygiene and Safety Professional 2: Position requires a Bachelor's in Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or Safety, and 5 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An advanced degree and relevant professional certification preferred (CSP or CIH).

Education/Experience for Industrial Hygiene and Safety Professional 3: Position requires a Bachelor's in Science, Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, or Safety, and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. An advanced degree and relevant professional certification preferred (CSP or CIH).

Desired Qualifications:

  • Working knowledge, and demonstrated application, of DOE and regulatory requirements related to safety in a research environment.

  • Basic knowledge of Laboratory organizations, operations, activities, and data collection tools.

  • Working knowledge and application of Integrated Safety Management, Integrated Work Management, and other safety procedures.

  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)

  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active DOE clearance.

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

No Clearance: This position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
