DESCRIPTION

This classification qualifies for Recruitment Incentives including a $30,000 hiring bonus, $1000 a month in housing and/or childcare subsidies for a combined total of up to $78,000 in recruitment incentives. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Patrols an assigned area by car, foot, or motorcycle to maintain law and order; regulates traffic; responds to radio and telephone dispatches; investigates unusual or suspicious conditions, traffic accidents and complaints; makes arrests, guards prisoners and questions suspects; issues citations and serves subpoenas and warrants; investigates or assists in investigating vice conditions, crimes reported or persons arrested; prepares evidence and appears in court; administers first aid and renders assistance to the injured; reports unsafe or hazardous conditions; prepares log of activities and keeps records; may act as radio dispatcher or jailer; assists in administrative and operational activities; and performs other related duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS TO FILE: Applicants must meet one of the following options A, B or C:

A. California Applicants: Currently employed full-time for at least one continuous year in the State of California as a Peace Officer, as defined by California Penal Code Sections 830, 830.1, and 830.2andpossession of a validBasic POST Certificate (https://post.ca.gov/Peace-Officer-Certificates) issued by the State of California (proof required) *.

OR

B. Out of State Applicants: Currently employed full-time for at least one continuous year of sworn general law enforcement experienceandpossession of theBasic Course Waiver (BCW) (https://post.ca.gov/basic-course-waiver-process) from the California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) (proof required) *.

OR

C. Reserve Officer Applicants: Current status as a reserve officer in the State of California, possession ofPOST Level 1 certificate (https://post.ca.gov/reserve-officer-program) issued by the State of California (proof required) and completion of 2,000 paid or volunteer hours working in a patrol capacity responding to a wide range of general calls for service.

Additional Requirements to File:

  • Twenty-one years of age or older.

  • A valid driver's license.

  • U.S. Citizenship or have applied for citizenship.

  • Citizenship must be granted within three years of appointment.

  • No felony convictions.

  • Possess good observation, writing, communication and human relation skills.

  • Possess good leadership and public service qualities.

  • Ability to make sound decisions; read, comprehend and retain technical training materials; endure periods of strenuous physical activity requiring good balance, coordination, flexibility, endurance and strength.

  • Ability to be compassionate, culturally sensitive, and non-discriminatory to a diverse population.

  • Ability to exercise tact using excellent interpersonal skills, solve problems, and demonstrate good mediation skills during highly confrontational situations.

*Proof of required documents, such as Basic POST certificate, Basic Course Waiver, POST Level 1 Certificate, or DD - 214 Member 4 for Veteran's Credit, must be uploaded to the online application at time of filing.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Recent college coursework in related field is desirable. Bilingual skills in English/Spanish or English/Southeast Asian languages are highly desirable

SELECTION PROCEDURE

EXAMINATION WEIGHTS:

This selection procedure will be conducted using a non-competitive process. Applications are evaluated based on training, experience, education, certificates and/or licenses. There is no examination.

This is a continuous eligible list, which will expire in six months, but may be extended. All applicants meeting the minimum requirements to file will be placed on the eligible list. Applicants receiving Veteran's Credit first and then in the order in which applications were filed. The continuous eligible list will expire in six months but may be extended. Eligible lists may be established periodically.

Individuals identified as the best-qualified applicants will be called to participate in the final selection procedure administered by the Police Department.

After a conditional offer of employment, all prospective employees must pass a thorough background investigation and a job-related medical examination. In addition, physical ability, polygraph and psychological examinations will be given.
