JOB SUMMARY

This position is responsible for working with department leadership to coordinate services and activities executed by behavioral health specialists and therapists across MHU, ED, med unit consultation, and partial hospitalization. These services include assessment, therapy, and discharge planning focusing on the treatment of mental illness. Provides education and leadership to behavioral specialists and therapists. Facilitates patient care rounds and treatment team meetings. Works with case management and ministry leadership on behavioral length of stay planning. Develops work schedules, addresses clinical or ethical concerns and is responsible for orientation and evaluation of staff. Serves as a member of the department performance improvement committee. Participates in the planning and development of partial hospitalization program and other programs involving behavioral specialists.

PERFORMANCE DUTIES

  • Maintains a working knowledge of the Behavioral Therapist and Behavioral Specialist roles and works as part of those teams, flexing assignments to fill in as necessary.

  • Assumes a leadership role in care of patients presenting with psychiatric needs from assessment to placement/referral to the appropriate level of care to discharge planning.

  • Responsible for arranging monthly Psychiatric Social Work Round Table meetings, encourages sharing of new resources, and discussion of job specific stress or conflicts. Responsible for keep PSW staff updated on current, changes, activities, information relative to SMMH.

  • Responsible for scheduling behavioral health specialist/therapist coverage throughout the department, and takes call as needed.

  • Monitors and manages team performance to ensure optimal delivery of services.

  • Ensures staffing is adequate to meet both operational and budgetary goals and adjusts staffing levels as appropriate for volume and acuity.

  • Keep current quarterly statistics.

  • Actively supports patient satisfaction initiatives. Shares appropriate data with associates and develops action plans to improve results.

  • Facilitates professional growth and development of behavioral health specialist/therapists to keep abreast of current trends and techniques

  • Responsible for keeping current policy and procedural documents that are specific to the behavioral health specialist/therapist roles and ensures that associates are informed of new/revised policies and procedures.

  • Maintains a current knowledge of federal, state, community mental health and third party requirements for the provision of service

  • Works closely with physician partner and administrative manager to provide support for the development and coordination of programs and services.

  • Represents and leads behavioral health specialist/therapist role in interdisciplinary team conferences and rounds.

  • Assumes a leadership role in helping clients, collaborating with agencies, providing services and coordinating treatment with other disciplines.

  • Assists medical and nursing staffs with the assessment of more difficult or complex patient problems by applying clinical techniques, such as crisis intervention.

  • Acts as a mentor, helps to identify problems, offers solutions, and leads in the resolution of conflicts pertaining to Emergency Center staff/patients and Psychiatric Social Work staff/patients.

  • Directs the resolution process regarding issues that arise throughout the hospital pertaining to Psychiatric Social Work services.

  • Supports, leads or participates in a variety of hospital committees, teams or groups as needed.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE

  • Education: Master’s degree in social work or psychology from an accredited university

  • Experience: Minimum of five years of postgraduate professional, relevant experience

  • Certification/Licensure: Must be licensed/certified in the State of Michigan and adhere to the code of ethics for area of licensure

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES

1. Additional training in and expertise in adolescent development is highly desirable.

2. Training and/or experience in the management of clinical operations highly required.

3. Work with combative patients and traumatic situations including psychiatric, dismembered and deceased patients

4. Scheduling expectations based on department needs flexible hours and on call time.
