Title: Epidemiologist - Diabetes and MiCelerity $54,000 - $62,000 / Posted Thru: 11-10-23

Location:  Remote/Virtual - Must Live in Michigan - Subject to Change Based on State of Michigan Requirements

Purpose:This position provides epidemiological expertise to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Bureau of Epidemiology and Population Health, Chronic Disease Epidemiology Section of the Lifecourse Epidemiology and Genomics Division (LEGD), and the Bureau of Health and Wellness on all matters concerning diabetes, kidney disease, and drug poisoning. This includes statewide surveillance, epidemiologic study design and planning, statistical analysis, program evaluation, and technical expertise and training.

Duties and Responsibilities: MiCelerity (60%): Conduct ongoing analysis and validation work of the data coming into MiCelerity, an MDHHS overdose surveillance system. Leverage analysis results to support data quality improvement efforts. Specific activities include: Perform and report on routine quality analysis reviews of MiCelerity data and utilization metrics including data cleaning and monthly analyses of the data. Assist with posting/publishing data into publications and dashboards. Coordinate and complete MiCelerity data requests. Attend relevant professional/public health events and participate in relevant trainings. Assist in development of the MiCelerity methodology documentation. Conduct analyses and develop dissemination tables and materials at the direction of the supervisor. Outreach to facilities with poor quality data for the purposes of data quality improvement. Collaboration with the Michigan Health Information Exchange, MiHIN, regarding Admit, Discharge, Transfer (ADT) data quality. Collaborate with the chronic disease registry, Chronicle, staff in informatics data-related meetings as discussed with supervisor. Aid in grant reporting and application development.

Diabetes (40%): Provide guidance and consultation on the design, development, and management of active, state-wide, public health surveillance on all diabetes and kidney disease outcomes including complications due to diabetes and kidney disease. Specific activities include: Conduct ongoing statistical analyses of trends in mortality, hospitalization, and comorbidities among Michigan persons with diabetes using data sources housed in the Division for Vital Records and Health Statistics (DVRHS) including the Michigan Inpatient Database (MIDB; hospitalizations database), and Michigan Resident Death Files. Conduct ongoing surveillance of diabetes-related burden indicators in conjunction with epidemiologists/coordinators in the LEGD who the data stewards of surveillance systems are such as Michigan Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (MiBRFSS) and Michigan Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System (MI PRAMS). Conduct ongoing surveillance of diabetes-related burden indicators using national data sources such as National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the United States Renal Data System. Work to access information from other data sources (such as Medicaid Data Warehouse) for purposes of understanding diabetes burden in specific Michigan populations over time. Produce surveillance products in user-friendly and ADA-compliant accessible formats (burden reports, fact sheets, websites) for the intended audience (including MDHHS staff, Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP) partners, health professionals, Michigan State legislators, the public, etc.).
