Job Title: Field Maintenance Manager

Location: California - SoCal area - When not traveling, this person will be able to work remotely to schedule their travel, maintain customer needs, review expenses, and determine if those expenses are due to a vendor, maintenance, and/or equipment issue.

Job Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8am-5pm (flexible) - 80% travel required

Job Summary: The Field Maintenance Manager is responsible for optimizing efficiency and profitability by overseeing the maintenance of equipment in both internal and external maintenance facilities at CRST. The manager plays a vital role in new business start-ups, conducting equipment readiness assessments, selecting maintenance vendors, and ensuring a positive first impression for customers. Additionally, the manager conducts account evaluations, including on-site inspections and coaching account managers in maintenance best practices, with the aim of improving CSA scores and reducing costs. The role also involves managing vendor relationships, negotiating prices with outsourced vendors, and addressing any special needs of the accounts. The manager evaluates existing specialty equipment and recommends replacement or extended use based on its condition. Furthermore, the manager conducts thorough reviews of maintenance expenses, focusing on creating solutions at the account level and implementing goals and business plans to minimize expenses.

Compensation: $73,221-$80,930 (Pay Bi-Weekly) *A final amount is dependent on factors including prior relevant experience, knowledge, and location. Typically, selected candidates are hired at a rate between the minimum and midpoint of the range. *Essential Duties and Responsibilities: *

  • Owns the new business start-up from the maintenance perspective to include: Ensuring the readiness of equipment, pre-selection of maintenance vendors in an outsourcing situation, an inspection of third-party equipment, if applicable, in a fleet takeover, and an on-site presence at the time of start-up to ensure the customers receives the best first impression.

  • After start-up, perform an account evaluation process which would include: On-site equipment inspections, coaching of CRST Dedicated Services, Inc account managers in good maintenance practices, and establishing on-site small parts inventory to facilitate better CSA scores and reduce costs.

  • Function as a vendor manager. While the Vehicle Reliability Team would continue to schedule trucks and process invoices, this position would establish the process for price negotiations with outsourced vendors to ensure the process of who will maintain the equipment and will communicate any special needs the account may have.

  • Inspect, prior to replacement, any existing specialty equipment to determine the need to replace or potentially extend the life, if the condition is good.

  • Own maintenance expense review with a heavy focus on solution creation at the account level, ensuring we have goals and business plans in place to drive out expenses in areas that have been identified.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Pass CRST background check and drug screen.

  • 2-3+ years of Class 8 maintenance experience is preferred.

  • 2-3+ years of Class 8 tractor, trailer, and tire experience is preferred.

  • 2-3+ years of supervisory, training, and management experience.

Overview of Position:

  • The Field Maintenance Manager will represent the maintenance culture of CRST with our supporting shops (in-house and vendors) and act as a liaison between our maintenance and operations departments.

  • This person would go to our customer sites to assess the equipment and the facility from a maintenance perspective. This includes:

  • Equipment inspections and audits. Complete documents and meet with the drivers, dispatchers, site managers, vendors, etc.

  • Sharing the findings of the inspections and audits with the shop.

  • Implement training with the drivers, ops managers, and shop managers on maintenance procedures and expectations to promote better work and reduce costs in regard to unscheduled repairs.

  • e. – This should have been caught on the PM and/or proper pre & post-trip inspections by drivers.

  • If we obtain a new customer or lane, this person will set up the start-up and make sure their equipment is in good shape and maintenance is going as planned.

  • When not traveling, this person will be able to work remotely to schedule their travel, maintain customer needs, review expenses, and determine if those expenses are due to a vendor, maintenance, and/or equipment issue.

  • A big goal is to work with these sites to change the maintenance perspective. A lot of these sites are not used to site evaluations, so it is important to build a good maintenance rapport and work with vendors for better rates.
