MD Anderson Cancer Center Research Investigator - Head & Neck Surgery in Houston, Texas

The mission of The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center is to eliminate cancer in Texas, the nation, and the world through outstanding programs that integrate patient care, research and prevention, and through education for undergraduate and graduate students, trainees, professionals, employees and the public.

KEY FUNCTIONS

· Plans, organizes, and assists Principal Investigator to direct complex research projects involving detection and elimination of head and neck and skull base cancers.

· Designs non-clinical and clinical research protocols/SOPs and experiments to accomplish specific goals or objectives for various projects. Evaluates resulting research data and independently revises techniques or approaches to resolve new experimental challenges.

· Maintains an accurate database for each specific project. Monitors and transfers patient information from the medical records into the electronic database and files. Assists with clinical data analysis for translational research projects. Reports results of the analyses including original data, with conclusions.

· Demonstrates excellent writing skills and prepares drafts of manuscripts, protocols, project narratives, SOPs for research grants, and grant reports.

· Utilizes in depth medical knowledge of oncology, head and neck and skull base surgery and bioinformatics for diverse clinical and nonclinical projects.

· Processes specimens from clinical studies and retrospective stored samples Applies basic Techniques in Molecular Biology/ Cancer Biology: Extract DNA, RNA (from collected research specimens), or protein samples from cells or tissues, Immunohistochemistry, PCR, Real-Time PCR, Western blot. Develops SOPs for specimen (tissue/blood/fluid) distribution with various collaborators to fulfill research goals.

· Categorizes the slides and blocks and enter the availability of specimens in the database. Order requests for re-cuts, frozen sections, sequencing tasks with the central lab facilities, as per the goals of the project.

· Collaborates with other departments, on the research findings and participates in the presentation of research results via verbal presentations, abstracts, publications, and posters.

Other duties as assigned.

Education Required: Bachelor's degree in one of the natural sciences or related field.

Experience Required: Five years of experience in scientific or experimental research work. With preferred degree, three years of required experience.
