MD Anderson Cancer Center Principal Safety Specialist - Environmental Sampling & Industrial Hygiene in Houston, Texas

Ideal candidate will have experience with environmental sampling, specifically pharmaceutical standards USP797, USP800, and USP 795, other industrial hygiene experience (respiratory protection (fit testing), air and water sampling); supervisory experience is strongly preferred.

SUMMARY

The primary purpose of the Principal Safety Specialist position is to provide technical expertise to resolve safety issues involving MD Anderson workforce members, visitors, patients, and contractors. Performs and completes special projects as assigned or as needed to address institutional safety issues. Maintains knowledge of applicable laws, regulations and national guidelines, relevant to section functions and responsibilities. Completes environmental and safety policy review and developments risk assessment, incident investigations, report writing and presentations to management in order to communicate risk and solutions. Facilitates cross- functional teams within division, department and institution in the implementation and maintenance of institutional safety policies, procedures, standards and best practices. Responsible for assessing compliance, health and safety risks associated with projects and changes in operations. Employee will be responsible for developing engineering, administrative and other controls to mitigate the risks.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES

Recognize, Evaluate and Mitigate Hazards Recognizes, evaluates and controls hazards related to occupational health and safety programs at MD Anderson. Serves in an advisory capacity and reports, monitors, and mitigates discrepancies in departmental, institutional, and regulatory guidelines, policies, and standard operating procedures. Acts as lead for pharmacy USP 797 environmental sampling and compliance. Acts as a technical expert to determine health & safety requirements needed to perform departmental, divisional and institutional activities. Manages contracts; develops and maintains the annual, quarterly, and monthly budget for assigned contracts. Follows departmental and institutional standard operating procedures as it relates to all areas of environmental health and safety (i.e., training, inspections, monitoring, etc.).

Compliance Manages the daily work of those assigned. Ensures their work is in compliance with all procedures, rules, and regulations as it relates to their job function. Initiates, develops, and implements new policies, procedures or programs necessary to effectively and efficiently comply with regulations. Ensures compliance with applicable policies, procedures and laws/regulations.

Program Support and Implementation

Reviews FARs and design documents, provide comments, and serves as a subject matter expert on building design as it pertains to occupational health and safety programs. Identifies programs in need of improvement or special projects needed to address institutional safety issues related to the occupational health and safety program, develops program mitigation strategies and completes implementations. Responsible for monitoring program compliance outcomes. Manages and supervises the safety technicians daily duties. A requirement of this position is to be competent and expected to enter data into mobile devices while working away from your workstation, where wi-fi is available. In areas where wi-fi is not available, data is expected to be entered or uploaded at the earliest opportunity.

Other duties as assigned.

Master's degree in Applied or Basic Science, Engineering field. Ten years of environmental health and safety experience. Certified in one or more of the following: *Certified Health Physicist (CHP) by the American Board of Health Physicists (ABHP). *Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) by the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH). *Certified Biological Safety Professional (CBSP) by the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA). *Associate Safety Professional (ASP) by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP). *Certified Safety Professional (CSP) by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).
