MD Anderson Cancer Center Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) - Ophthalmology in Houston, Texas

Advanced Practice Provider - Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant - Ophthalmology Float Position

The ideal candidate will have prior ophthalmology, surgery, or plastics patient care experience. If you are an APRN then you must have Registered Nurse First Assist (RNFA) certification.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES Patient Care - Direct

  1. Provide advanced patient care in a clinical setting, to include evaluation of new patients, existing patients, and inpatients; to provide immediate preoperative and postoperative assessment of patients.

  2. Perform routine patient care and advanced technical studies in a clinical setting to include but not limited to:

a. Epilation of lashes

b. Placement of punctal plugs

c. Appropriate wound care management

d. Tarsorrhaphy removal

e. Corneal & conjunctival scraping / culture

  1. Assist at surgery in operating room (OR)

  2. Provide APP cross-coverage both in the clinic and OR setting in other ophthalmic sub-specialties as needed to ensure all operational needs are met.

Patient Care - Indirect

  1. Provide counseling and education (including surgical consent) to the patient and their family concerning their health care and sensitive ethical situations.

  2. Provide a direct link from the supervising physician to other physicians/departments to facilitate optimal patient care and timeliness of appropriate care.

  3. Provide a contact for patients, families, referring physicians, pharmacists, and other allied health personnel concerning the immediate and long-term patient care plans.

  4. Review all diagnostic testing on consultative and primary ophthalmic patients.

Administrative

  1. Process correspondence with patients, physicians, third party carriers and other entities as delegated by the supervising physician.

  2. Assist supervising physician with routine chart follow-ups and order appropriate referrals, laboratory, radiological or supportive care as needed.

  3. Assist with and maintain patient records in compliance with UTMDACC guidelines.

Research

  1. Have knowledge of Ophthalmology protocol-based treatment options.

  2. Be able to identify potential patients who are protocol candidates.

  3. Review patient charts carefully, input data into computer database.

  4. Be able to discuss with a patient the rationale for protocol-based therapy.

  5. Have knowledge of and document in the record elements required by protocol.

  6. Help with collection and analysis of AJCC TNM classification for new patients' tumors seen in the Clinic.

Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION

Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.

Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) , ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100).
