MD Anderson Cancer Center Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) - Head & Neck Surgery - Inpatient in Houston, Texas

We are seeking an Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the Head and Neck Surgery for our Inpatient Clinic. Open to an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. The ideal APP candidate will have inpatient experience, surgical airway patient care knowledge, and the ability to round autonomously as needed. Prior Clinic, Oncology, or Plastics patient care experience is preferred. If APRN, the ability to care for broad spectrum of patients of all ages is preferred. Open to new grads.

JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES Patient Care - Direct

a. Provide advanced patient care in a clinical setting, to include evaluation of new patients, existing patients, and inpatients; to provide immediate preoperative and postoperative assessment of patients.

b. Perform routine patient care and advanced technical studies in a clinical setting to include but not limited to:

  1. Fiberoptic nasopharyngolaryngoscopy

  2. Fiberoptic tracheoscopy

  3. Placement or removal of dobhoff feeding tubes

  4. Appropriate wound care management

c. Participates in multidisciplinary discharge rounds on the unit

d. Conducts inpatient rounds and records patient status in the medical record as clinically indicated.

e. Manages daily patient problems as they arise and document actions implemented in their resolution.

f. Effectively communicates with service team members, consultants, nursing, and other health care providers to facilitate patient care coordination.

g. Provides appropriate handoff at the end of each shift.

h. Dictates discharge summaries.

i. Conducts discharge planning.

j. Perform routine admission, transfer and discharge procedures.

Patient Care - Indirect

a. Provide counseling and education to the patient and their family concerning their health care and sensitive ethical situations.

b. Provide a direct link from the supervising physician to other physicians/departments to facilitate optimal patient care and timeliness of appropriate care.

c. Provide a contact for patients, families, referring physicians, pharmacists, and other allied health personnel concerning the immediate and long term patient care plans.

Administrative

a. Process correspondence with patients, physicians, third party carriers and other entities as delegated by the supervising physician.

b. Assist supervising physician with routine chart follow-ups and order appropriate referrals, laboratory, radiological or supportive care as needed.

c. Assist with and maintain patient records in compliance with UTMDACC guidelines.

Research

a. Review patient charts carefully, input data into computer database.

b. Assist research nurses in identifying patients who may benefit by protocol registration

EDUCATION

Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant.

LICENSURE / CERTIFICATION

Required: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) or Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant. Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.

MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas.

Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) , ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100).
