WSP USA Environmental Compliance Scientist in Herndon, Virginia

WSP is currently initiating a search for an Environmental Compliance Coordinator for our Richmond, VA office. The following locations will also be considered: Northern Virginia (Herndon office area) . Our clients span a wide range of industries, including renewable energy, petroleum, transportation, industrial/commercial, mining, and local government agencies. You will be involved in a variety of projects from long-term endeavors with established project teams, to short-term, quick-turn projects with self-driven groups and individuals. This specific position will start with a long-term project assignment in the Quantico, Virginia area , where the candidate will participate in our client’s environmental compliance program that provides onsite environmental support, risk management and mitigation, permit tracking, waste stream evaluation and tracking, confirmation of project and contractor compliance, and meeting internal environmental requirements. A local candidate will commute to the project site; a Richmond-based candidate will be eligible for per diem to cover lodging and expenses. See below for additional details.

Your Impact

  • The dedicated onsite Project Environmental Compliance Coordinator (ECC) will execute day-to-day responsibilities to ensure continued environmental compliance, including demolition and asbestos permits and notifications, VPDES, RCRA, Clean Water Act, waste management, SPCC, SWPPP, ODCP, FRP, stormwater and E&S, land disturbance, air emissions, ASTs and USTs, EPCRA, wetlands, VMRC, and historic preservation requirements. They are responsible for monitoring, reporting, and ensuring compliance for any environmental spills, releases, or containment issues, and are actively involved in the client’s environmental auditing and compliance process.

  • Synthesize and summarize large amounts of information contained in regulatory files, environmental permits, and other environmental documentation.

  • Collect and document field data and observations in a clear and organized manner utilizing appropriate personal protective equipment and workspace monitoring equipment.

  • Assist in the collection of environmental samples (soil, groundwater, surface water, and vapor).

  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret field and analytical data obtained during field investigations.

  • Evaluate findings, make recommendations, and prepare written and verbal reports. Prepare data and visualizations such as tables, charts, accurate reports, and illustrations.

  • Write technical reports summarizing research with findings and conclusions, generating complete, accurate, and concise documentation using electronic systems, field/work site notes, and software.

  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.

  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science degree in environmental science, environmental studies, environmental policy, engineering, earth science or a related discipline.

  • 2 to 4 years of experience working as an environmental scientist with compliance experience.

  • Working knowledge of U.S. environmental laws and regulations, including but not limited to those listed above.

  • Initial job assignment will entail onsite work at a client’s jobsite on a daily basis. Schedule to be determined by contractor and client schedules, but will typically be 10-hour days 5 to 6 days per week. Will be able to rotate some weekends with other site ECCs, but will be expected to routinely work Saturdays and occasionally Sundays. Overtime will be compensated at straight time for all billable hours over 40.

  • Initial Project Site located in Northern Virginia (Quantico area). Local candidates will be expected to commute to site on a daily basis. Candidates based in Richmond or other location >50 miles from site will be eligible for per diem in accordance with Federal FAR regulations to cover lodging and meals while away from home.

  • Assignment duration expected one year or greater. However, assigned location may change depending on client requirements, with per diem eligibility based on project location and employee’s home base.

  • Candidate will be provided with a dedicated company vehicle, laptop, appropriate personal protective equipment, and any other tools and equipment needed to safely and effectively perform work duties.

  • Job assignments may involve work related to asbestos and regulated material abatement/removal, waste disposal sites, and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials.

  • Must be able to pass a HAZWOPER physical and be medically able to wear a tight-fitting respirator.

  • Participation in an OSHA-mandated medical surveillance program will be required, and safety training will be provided before being assigned to work on these sites

  • Applicants must be able to work in locations that feature the rough terrain typical of construction sites and to enter and work within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities.

  • This role is subject to a client mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of the client mandated drug/alcohol testing policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.

  • Must have strong analytical skills and be able to solve problems independently, using knowledge gained from increasing experience.

  • Self-sufficient, self-motivated and ability to work under pressure of deadlines.

  • Valid US driver's license.

  • Capable interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to a scientific and non-scientific audience.

  • Effective self-leadership with attention to detail, results orientation, and managing multiple priorities in a dynamic work environment.

  • Ability to learn new techniques, perform multiple tasks simultaneously, follow instruction, work independently, and comply with company policies.

  • Proficiency with business writing, office automation and communication software, technology, and tools.

  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP’s health, safety, and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • OSHA 40-Hour HAZWOPER Training, DOT Training, CPR and First Aid Training, and other related environmental certifications.

  • Experience interpreting and ensure environmental compliance with federal and state regulations as listed above.

  • Experience with rules and regulations related to asbestos containing materials (ACM); Virginia Asbestos Inspector license a plus.

  • Erosion and sediment control inspection.
