The College of Science and Technology at North Carolina A&T State University seeks a dynamic and innovative chairperson for the Department of Physics. The successful candidate is expected to possess a distinguished record of scholarship and research, appreciate the integration of learning, discovery and engagement, have significant experience in higher education, and to have experience in securing extramural funding. This is a 12-month administrative position with a tenure-track faculty appointment at the rank of Professor. An appointment at the Associate professor level might be considered for candidates who exhibit exceptional potential for growth. The successful candidate is expected to have an exemplary record of scholarship and research, along with a vision for invigorating and expanding the educational, research, and service efforts of the department. Areas of research strength within the department include biophysics, chemical physics, computational physics, experimental nuclear physics, material sciences, and atmospheric science and meteorology. An open and collegial style of management and leadership is desired.

Reporting directly to the Dean of the College of Science and Technology, the Department Chair is expected to provide leadership and foster excellence in all departmental efforts. Some of the Chair’s responsibilities include promoting student success; student recruitment and mentoring, ensuring quality undergraduate and graduate programs; faculty workload assignment, faculty recruitment, mentorship, development and evaluation; supporting faculty research, teaching, and service; providing oversight and stewardship for the administrative, financial, and academic programs; engaging faculty in strategic planning; program assessment and reporting; and teaching.

Primary Function of Organizational Unit:

North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University is an 1890 land-grant doctoral research university dedicated to learning, discovery, and community engagement. The College of Science and Technology integrates science, mathematics, and technology to advance knowledge and prepare the next generation of science and technology leaders. The College embraces the mission of the University as a land-grant doctoral research institution with a distinction in STEM by expanding new frontiers in science, creating novel technologies, developing innovative approaches to STEM teaching and learning, and formulating scientific and technological solutions that lead to transformative social and economic development. The College houses the departments of Applied Engineering Technology, Biology, Built Environment, Chemistry, Computer Systems Technology, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, and the Applied Science Technology PhD Program. The College is experiencing substantial growth in enrollment, faculty size, curricula, and research.

The Department of Physics is an active department with eleven full time faculty who are heavily engaged in research. Current research areas include biophysics, chemical physics, computational physics, experimental nuclear physics, and atmospheric science and meteorology. The department of Physics offers a Bachelor of Science in Physics, Bachelor of Science in Atmospheric Science and Meteorology, an Master of Science in Physics, and a concentration in Applied Physics under the College PhD Program in Applied Science and Technology.

Requirements:

Qualifications include PhD or equivalent terminal degree. Applicant must have a minimum of six years of demonstrated excellence in teaching and research consistent with eligibility for appointment at the rank of associate professor or professor and some administrative experience relevant to the position.
