The Chairperson of the department of Kinesiology is a 12-month position that reports to the Dean and serves as the chief administrative and academic leader of the department. The Chairperson will be expected to provide visionary leadership of innovative programs with strong educator-researcher emphasis. In addition to the general oversight of the department, he or she will be responsible for strategic planning; budget development, management and allocation; recruitment and retention of faculty and students; faculty, staff, and student development; management and improvement of curricula; evaluating faculty performance; program assessments and reviews, obtaining and maintaining accreditation; fundraising; interacting with other departments and university leaders to represent the goals of the department. The chairperson must implement strategies to increase recruitment, retention, and graduation rates of students in all degree programs and work with faculty to develop research infrastructure.

The John R. and Kathy R. Hairston College of Health and Human Sciences is comprised of the departments Kinesiology, Psychology, Social Work and Sociology, Population Health Management and Policy, Communications Sciences and Disorders, Physician Assistant Studies, as well as the School of Nursing. The Hairston College capitalizes on the synergistic relationships between these departments to develop advanced academic health science programming, enhance the training of healthcare practitioners, and conduct collaborative multidisciplinary research and scholastic activity. The Hairston College is also home to the Center of Excellence in Integrative Health Disparities and Equity Research ( CIHDER )

The Department of Kinesiology is one of the largest departments on campus with current enrollment of over 700 students. The Department of Kinesiology trains evidence-based leaders and practitioners in the sub-fields of Kinesiology, meeting the needs of people who are apparently healthy, at risk, and with known disease(s). The Kinesiology faculty possess a wide depth of knowledge in areas such as physical therapy, exercise science, adaptive physical education, sports management, recreation and leisure studies, exercise immunology, health and wellness, nutrition and community health. We currently offer a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Kinesiology with two concentrations: (1) Exercise Science and (2) Recreation Sport Management. Kinesiology graduates are prepared to pursue entry level positions within the sport and recreation management, rehabilitation, recreation, and healthcare fields. The Kinesiology degree also prepares students who desire to pursue advanced graduate degrees in disciplines such as athletic training, physical therapy, sport management, public health, therapy, recreation and leisure studies and more. The mission of the Kinesiology Department is to prepare graduates who serve as: (a) catalysts for learning, with a comprehensive knowledge base; (b) decision-makers who are able to choose and use the most effective strategies to meet the needs of candidates or clients; and practitioners who are able to apply their theoretical knowledge gained in a variety of practical settings. In addition, the Kinesiology Department provides a variety of lifetime activities for the university. The vision of the Kinesiology Department is to continue to evolve as a leader in developing professionals who are well-prepared and are sensitive to changes in technology, are receptive to diversity, and are able to meet health and fitness needs of a changing society at the local, state, national, and international levels.

Requirements:

The successful candidate must possess: (a) a doctoral degree in health, kinesiology, recreation, or a related field, (b) experience that will support appointment at the rank of Associate Professor or full professor, at a minimum of three years of experience in an administrative or management position, (d) a minimum of three years teaching at the collegiate level at an institution that emphasized teaching, scholarly productivity, and engagement within the kinesiology discipline, and (e) a strong record of extramural funding. Ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively with diverse students, faculty, staff, and external constituencies is required.

Preferred:

Preference is given to the candidate with experience managing educational programs at the university level in a dynamic environment. Primary experience securing and maintaining CAAHEP (Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) accreditation is preferred.
