Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Safety Attendant in Grand Rapids, Michigan

Summary: Under the direction and supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Safety Attendant, who is non-licensed, receives special training to provide and maintain safety and defined patient care duties to assigned patients(s). Provides visualization and supervision of select patient population to assure a safe environment within the healthcare setting. Age Specific Responsibility: Essential Job Responsibilities: Observes patient and reports any activities that require the attention and/or intervention of a health care team member. Provides assistance in monitoring and maintaining patient safety. Stays in direct visualization of assigned patient at all times. Communicates appropriately with assigned patient and members of the healthcare team. Continually scans the patient environment for safety concerns. Intervenes to eliminate these concerns within the scope of the role and competencies. Continues responsibility of monitoring behaviors when therapy and family are present. Those who have a primary safety attendant resource position must meet an 8 hour a month minimum, and have those hours scheduled during our open scheduling period. Assists with support services: Maintains patient's environment in a clean and safe manner, Transports patient to appointments (i.e. x-ray, therapy, etc.), Makes unoccupied bed Performs other duties as assigned Essential Job Qualifications (Knowledge, Education, and Training Requirements) High school graduate or equivalent G.E.D. Ability to read, write and comprehend basic medical terminology Physical Requirements: Must be able to exert 20 to 35 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects (*). Ability to follow specific directions and maintain alertness for continuous patient observation. Ability to continuously stand and sit (90% of time). Ability to distinguish sounds. Must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned department. Must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span and possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs, and to provide the care needed as described in the department's policies and procedures. Other Preferred Job Qualifications: Previous experience as a Nursing Assistant Six months experience in patient care facility preferred Completed or in Progress of an Education in a healthcare related field Restrictions: The following tasks are not permitted to be performed by a person in this position due to limited training. Administering tube feedings Administering medication Applying or releasing orthotics and prosthetics Bathing patients Dressing changes Feeding of patients with Dysphagia Insertion or removal of any tubes, drains, IV's, catheters, etc. Trach care or suction tracheostomy Performing sterile procedures Taking vital signs Customer Service Responsibilities: Demonstrates excellent customer service behaviors consistent with organizational and departmental standards. Consistently promotes teamwork and direct communication with co-workers. Deals discreetly and sensitively with confidential information. Responsibilities in Quality Improvement: Contribute by participating in meetings, identifying problems and seeking solutions. Provide quality patient care. Attend required staff meetings or read summary of staff meeting minutes. Completes and maintains required competencies including annual Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) certification.
