Description:

SUMMARY

The Pharmacy Extern functions under the direction of a staff pharmacist in the processing of medication orders, intravenous admixture orders, and individual patient prescriptions.

Computer Competency

Shows how to use (through a competency assessment) a standard desktop and windows-based computer system, including a basic understanding of email, e-learning, intranet and computer navigation. Ability to use other software as required to perform the essential functions of the job.

Physical/Mental

Minimum Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing IV admixtures, use of a computer keyboard). May

require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs.), including boxes, equipment, unit dose-cassettes,

and IV solutions and stooping or kneeling (e.g., to pick up items from the floor, to remove and replace

items on lower shelves, and to file documents in lower file drawers). Sitting, walking, or standing for long

periods of time (4-8 hours) is often necessary. Must be able to physically operate the equipment for the job.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Potential for exposure to infectious patients and materials. Potential for exposure to hazardous and toxic substances (including chemotherapy, cytotoxic drugs, and cleaning solutions). Potential for sticks or cuts by needles and other sharp items. Potential for muscoloskeletal injuries if proper lifting and carrying techniques are not used.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 Accurately compounds intravenous admixtures using aseptic technique

 Interprets physicians' prescriptions and medication orders and fills them under the direction of a staff pharmacist

 Fills unit dose medication carts and checks these carts when filled by pharmacy technicians

 Stocks medication bins and shelves and intravenous solution carts

 Fills floor stock replacements and floor supply requisitions

 Assists in process improvement and activities to eliminate redundant activity and reduce costs.

 Promotes teamwork by keeping others informed, participating effectively in group decision making, working to accomplish team objectives and projects and soliciting feedback about one's effectiveness as a team member.

 Performs other duties as assigned.

To ensure appropriate utilization of Protected Health Information (PHI) associated with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Saint Mary’s Confidentiality of Information Standards, as well as other regulatory entities, individuals employed in this position will be granted systems and information access as appropriate for this position.
