Job Description

This administrative professional will support research and operational staff within the Computational Science Center. Those staff members enable success across the NREL mission by leading efforts in computational science, applied mathematics, visualization, informatics, numerical optimization, discrete systems, complex fluids, and data management. This position will be based at NREL’s South Table Mountain Site in Golden, Colorado, and involves mostly routine administrative assignments, frequent interactions with management and staff, and periodic interactions with national and international visitors.

The person in this position will:

  • Execute administrative functions for busy staff members, usually under close direction and supervision.

  • Provide timely, accurate, and effective administrative support on assigned tasks, which may include support for on-site meetings, visitor assistance, acting as primary administrative resource for many interns, ordering/maintaining office and kitchen supplies, distributing mail, changing room furniture setups for some meetings, scheduling and organizing information about tutorials and seminars, helping schedule or implement prescribed calendar holds for candidate interviews, compiling/organizing provided information about projects or proposals, assisting with expense reports, and other tasks as assigned.

  • Work cooperatively with other administrative staff on center-wide tasks, activities, and events.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Expected Knowledge, Skills, and Attributes:

  • Ability to follow instructions, execute prioritized tasks, and complete assignments with strict deadlines.

  • Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment where there are frequent interruptions and shifting priorities, with a knack for getting things done with attention to detail in such an environment.

  • Comfortable with facilitating a productive hybrid environment for others, providing equivalent support to staff that may be either in person or remote on any given day.

  • In routine situations, demonstrated ability to work proactively and take initiative as needed and allowed.

  • Eager to work behind the scenes to help others complete their tasks, or to complete tasks on their behalf.

  • Ability to effectively work with and communicate clearly with a community that is international in scope, with staff from diverse cultural and technical backgrounds, and to work collaboratively as part of a team.

  • Ability to follow standard guidance to complete tasks within the authority of the position, and to seek input as needed when non-standard tasks arise.

  • Demonstrated basic-to-intermediate computer skills on a Mac and/or PC, including moderate proficiency with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams) and PDF generation/manipulation software (Preview, Acrobat, etc.).

  • Aptitude for quickly learning new skills, processes, and business software systems with sometimes complicated user interfaces.

  • Capable of gathering and synthesizing information from various sources and using it to more fully inform one’s own routine work and communications with others about tasks.

Basic Qualifications

High School Diploma or equivalent, or equivalent relevant education/experience.

  • Previous exposure to technical and specialized terminology relevant to computational science, energy efficiency, renewable energy, etc.

  • Demonstrated intermediate computer skills on a Mac and/or PC, including proficiency with previously stated Microsoft Office programs and PDF generation/manipulation software.

  • Familiarity with technology that supports or enables presentations, online meetings, and video/web conferencing.

  • Some degree of familiarity with collaborative tools for project and file organization, such as Microsoft Teams.

  • Some familiarity with or experience using business systems such as Workday, Concur, or Oracle solutions, and ability to learn to use custom-designed business systems, databases, or sites.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)

Job Profile: Business Support I / Annual Salary Range: $38,300 - $61,300

NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
