Description

The City of Garden City is accepting applications for Maintenance Technician IV with the Garden City Regional Airport. This position is responsible for performing general day-to-day work activities for the Garden City Regional Airport airfield and landside, including the maintenance of City property (tools, equipment, vehicles, grounds, and infrastructure) as assigned by Supervisor.

Examples of Duties

  • Daily inspection of the airfield and landside, including identification of discrepancies.

  • Daily performance of corrective actions of airfield discrepancies including painting, pavement maintenance, FOD removal, NAVAID repair, surface conditions, construction activities, public protection, dirt work, airfield electrical, landscaping and wildlife hazards.

  • Daily performance of corrective actions of landside discrepancies including painting, pavement maintenance, trash removal, surface conditions, construction activities, public protection, landscaping, and wildlife remediation.

  • Ability to maintain an electronic log of work completed and material usage.

  • Ability to monitor and communicate using radios.

  • Must communicate verbally with employees, members of the public, tenants, local organizations, and airport guests to create a harmonious working relationship.

  • Ability to operate heavy airport equipment to remove snow, sweep pavement, and landscape airport property.

  • Ability to learn and perform specialized duties in one or more of the following functional areas: facilities, security, signage, pavement markings, pavement management, debris removal, NAVAID repair, snow removal, construction activities, public protection, airfield electrical, landscaping, wildlife remediation, and vehicle and equipment maintenance.

  • Responsible for following all airport rules and regulations.

  • Assume responsibility to work independently and recognize areas requiring attention without supervision.

  • Responsible for exercising authority to prevent unauthorized activities by tenants, employees, or the public in violation of safety and security regulations or procedures.

  • Responds and performs duties during airport emergencies.

  • Maintains City property including tools, equipment, vehicles, and infrastructure.

  • Interacts and provides quality customer service to City employees, public and tenants.

  • Assists and conducts airport tours and events.

  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, on-call duty, and responds to unscheduled callbacks will be required.

  • May be assigned other duties and responsibilities either on a temporary or permanent basis that are operational/maintenance functions.

  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Possess working knowledge of airport maintenance and operational requirements and of necessary supplies, materials and equipment. Knowledge of Federal regulations pertinent to airport operations security, and maintenance. Possess knowledge of safety practices and procedures, electrical systems, pavement maintenance, and landscaping maintenance. Possess a mechanical aptitude and skill to operate equipment to maintain facilities. Must be able to retain composure when dealing with stressful situations. Must be able to read and comprehend written material. Must be able to listen and apply information and instructions. Must be able to communicate electronically (computer/iPad/cell phone), verbally or in writing. Must be able to learn and retain knowledge of Federal, State and Local laws as they pertain to airport operations, security, and maintenance. Working knowledge of general heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC), plumbing, and building plans.

Education, Experience, and Certifications: High school diploma or GED. Two years’ experience in heavy equipment operation, construction work, pavement maintenance, landscaping, mechanical, electrical, preferably at an airport. Ability to pass a rigorous background security check to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Must successfully complete and demonstrate knowledge of FAA Part 139 training within six months of employment. Valid Driver’s License required. Must obtain a Kansas Driver’s License within 60 days of establishing residency.

Supplemental Information

Work Environment: Work is performed in extreme, moderate and temperate heat and cold conditions. Majority of work is performed outdoors; humid, sleet, rain, high and gusting winds, snow, and ice. Surfaces: concrete, asphalt, gravel, sand, weeds, clay and grass. Must be able to work around aircraft noise, fumes, and chemicals with proper protection. Must be able to work in cold weather conditions to remove snow and ice from paved surfaces. Must be able to work in hot weather conditions to mow, trim, and landscape airport grounds.

Physical Characteristics: Ability to lift 100 lbs., which includes frequent lifting of 10-20 pounds, occasional lifting of 21-50 pounds, and occasional lifting of 51-100 pounds. Occasional stooping, reaching (horizontally), and carrying will be associated with the weight listed above. Must be able to move about independently, including on irregular terrain. Must be able to stand and walk for long periods. Ability to perform heavy work requiring frequent stooping/bending and heavy lifting with exposure to elements. Requires willingness and ability to perform manual labor for extended periods in adverse weather to include performance of routine and repetitive tasks. Must have adequate vision to operate and maintain equipment. Must have adequate hearing to operate and communicate on radios.
