Job Summary and Qualifications

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. Under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN), the PCT assists the nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with the PCT’s skills/training and the needs of the Department, and consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment. The PCT complies with all hospital policies/procedures and observes the State Board of Nursing rules for unlicensed personnel.

What you will do in this role:

SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Performs various patient care activities necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. Ensures patient stay is not delayed. Handles complaints in courteous and professional manner informing Team Lead and Clinical Coordinator.

  2. Gives direct, selected patient care under the supervision of the Registered Nurse.

  3. Assist in the smooth, efficient functioning of the nursing unit including transcription of medical orders, scheduling of procedures/testing, obtaining/maintaining supplies and equipment and general clerical duties including use of computer systems.

  4. Transports, positions and drapes patients for exams and treatments.

  5. Takes and records vital signs, weights and I&O.

  6. Responsible for stocking rooms with supplies.

  7. Collects urine drug and breath alcohol screens.

  8. Provides encouragement, support and comfort to patients and family members.

  9. Monitors, records and communicates patient condition as appropriate utilizing computerized documentation systems. Demonstrates ability to maintain patient records.

  10. Provides age and culturally appropriate care.

  11. Orients and mentors new staff members.

  12. Follows Standard Precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

  13. Demonstrates effective communication skills and skills necessary for Emergency Medical Tech.

  14. Ensures patient stay is not delayed.

  15. Orders unit supplies and nourishment.

  16. Maintains neat and organized work space.

  17. Protects patient confidentiality and privacy.

  18. Demonstrates safety principles related to patient care.

  19. Duties as otherwise specified.

  20. Maintains current knowledge of emergency department processes/procedures/policies.

  21. Demonstrates awareness and verbalizes self-learning needs.

  22. Presents professional appearance.

  23. Responsible for delivery of specimens using Universal Precautions and picks-up medications from the Pharmacy.

  24. Clean stretchers, closets, cabinets, as appropriate.

  25. Tag and report defective equipment as per department policy.

  26. EMT/Tech may perform the following with completion of orientation and documented competency:

a. CPR compressions

b. Connect patient to oxygen and monitor under the direction of an RN

c. Perform 12 Lead EKG

d. Obtain urine and sputum samples

e. Perform blood draws/venipuncture

f. Initiate and discontinue peripheral intravenous catheters

g. Perform finger stick glucose testing/monitoring

h. Perform oral suctionin

What qualifications you will need:

EDUCATION:

Required: High School graduate (GED), BLS/CPR

EXPERIENCE:

Required: Recent computer experience; data entry and retrieval. Experience with medical terminology.

Preferred: Experience as a unit secretary is desirable. Experience as a nursing assistant or EMT desirable.
