Ultrasound Technologist (Sonographer)

Currently recruiting a Ultrasound Technologist in San Antonio, Texas, to work at San Antonio Military Medical Center (BAMC) and associated clinics in the greater San Antonio area providing medical care for military members, retirees, and their families. The Ultrasound Technologist is a full-time position, 40 hours per week, with the following shifts:

Shifts:

  • Monday – Friday: 0645 – 1515* / 2230 – 0700

  • Monday – Tuesday: 1500 – 2330

  • Wednesday – Sunday: 1430 – 2300

  • Thursday – Friday: 0700 – 1530

  • Saturday – Sunday: 0700 – 1930

  • Sunday – Thursday: 2230 – 0700

    Shifts with an * are only scheduled during orientation period.

​​​​​​​Services are required on Federal holidays as needed.

All employees spend the first six to eight weeks on dayshift for training.

DUTIES OF THE ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST:

  • Independently performs scans which illustrates normal/abnormal anatomy through control of Time Gain Compensation (TGC), near field and far field gain, or change of transducer frequencies to optimize the scans for diagnostic use.

  • Performs sonographic examinations for physicians to use in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide variety of defects and diseases, which shall be performed in accordance with the guidelines of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) and American College of Radiology (ACR).

  • Performs diagnostic 2D static, B-Node, and real time ultrasound of the breast, as well as routine and emergent diagnostic sonography, including but not limited to abdominal, breast, obstetric, gynecologist, superficial, venous, neural, and miscellaneous examinations.

  • Performs physical breast exams as needed on female patients.

  • Assists Radiologists in performing invasive diagnostic techniques such as needle biopsies, aspirations, sono-hysterograms and guided needle-wire placement examinations for surgery.

  • Confers with Radiologists and physicians to establish requirements of nonstandard examinations and determines technical factors such as positioning, number, and thickness cut of scans, etc., to satisfy examination requirements.

  • Possesses knowledge of current imaging techniques and stays abreast of any new developments within the field of study.

  • Receives patient, operates ultrasound equipment, and scans patients to obtain images necessary for requested examination, as well as medical professional guidance from staff Radiologists.

  • Recognizes when different scans, positions or angulations are needed to better illustrate, or accurately define internal structures.

  • Obtains an acceptable and satisfactory diagnostic image, as determined by Radiologists, for interpretation.

  • Processes digital images of specific structures while simultaneously obtaining doppler signals, and records images and doppler shifts, along with patient information for interpretation.

  • Notifies Radiologists and physicians of the results of examinations to provide preliminary diagnostic evaluations and identifies any significant findings that may require immediate attention and/or visualization while the patient is undergoing the examination and remains in the department.

  • Maintains and cleans ultrasound equipment on a regular basis, using sterilization techniques in accordance with the manufacturer and MTF standards.

  • Provides training to military personnel/students in Ultrasound principles, procedures, techniques, scanner capabilities, as well as hands-on training for Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) purposes.

QUALIFICATIONS OF THE ULTRASOUND TECHNOLOGIST:

  • Graduated from an accredited program or military equivalent program in order to meet the education requirements established for the certification(s) listed below.

  • BLS

  • Maintain a current American Registry of Diagnostical Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) certification.

  • Minimum of one (1) year experience within the last five 5) years providing services as a certified Ultrasound Technologist.

  • Must be an US citizen for access to government computers.
