Assist in the evaluation of work operations to quantify hazardous exposures using methods such as collecting noise data, air samples and ventilation measurements. Assist in the design or modification of workplaces, processes or products to control or eliminate hazards. Assist in the development of safety and occupational health standards to reduce the frequency, severity and cost of accidents and occupational illnesses. Assist in the training of workers, supervisors, managers, or other safety and occupational health personnel in safety or occupational health subjects. Requirements Conditions of Employment Qualifications Who May Apply: To be eligible for consideration you must meet the definition of recent graduate as defined below: Recent Graduate: a person who was awarded (or will be awarded by June 2024) a degree by an institution of higher education not more than two years before the date of the appointment of the applicant. Basic Requirement for Safety and Occupational Health Specialist position: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes assisting in managing safety or occupational health program elements; or, applying safety and occupational health standards, regulations, practices, and procedures to eliminate or control potential hazards; or, assisting in analyzing or evaluating new and existing jobs, processes, products, or other systems to determine the existence, severity, probability, and outcome of hazards; or, assisting in designing or modifying workplaces, processes, products, or other systems to control or eliminate hazards. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). OR Education: One full year of graduate level education with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene). OR Superior Academic Achievement: Successful completion (or completion no later than June 2024) of all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene) OR degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology with Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A). In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Superior Academic Achievement is based on: (1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR (2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR (3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/).
