Description of Work Unit

The Statistics department currently comprises 21 faculty and over 50 graduate students in our MS, MAS , and PhD graduate programs, and has a network of faculty affiliates at nearby research agencies (National Center for Atmospheric Research, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, among others). Our faculty members have a wide range of expertise and are involved in various interdisciplinary graduate training and research activities. Internal and external consulting activities of the department are supported through the Graybill Statistical Laboratory. Position Summary

During Summer 2024, the College of Natural Sciences and the Department of Statistics will be sponsoring several paid research opportunities for undergraduates.

• Students will work with Statistics faculty and graduate students on a variety of research projects (see full list attached).

• Students will be paid $20 per hour up to $1250.

• The schedule is flexible, but it is expected that students will meet with faculty advisors at least once a week and spend between 10 and 20 hours per week working on the project between 05/16/24 – 06/30/24. Extended and alternative schedules are possible.

• At the end of the project, students will be required to prepare a poster or written report.

• Students are strongly encouraged to submit their work at CSU CURC (Celebrate Undergraduate Research and Creativity) in Spring 2025.

Position Minimum Qualifications

To qualify, students need to:

  1. Be a CSU undergraduate student, with preference for students majoring or minoring in Statistics or Data Science.

  2. Be available to work and meet with faculty between 05/16 – 06/30. It may be possible to do work remotely, depending on the project. Extended and alternative schedules are possible.

• Oral and written communication skills to discuss and document research findings

• Ability to work independently

• Problem solving skills to address technical and methodological issues that arise during the course of the research

• Ability to identify and apply appropriate analytical methods

• Strong organization and interpersonal skills
