Description of Work Unit

Founded in 1870, Colorado State University is among the nation’s leading research universities and enrolls approximately 32,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. The School of Social Work at Colorado State University has made a continuous effort to develop and maintain a program that is responsive to three distinct, but related, interests:

  • The profession of social work is represented by the Council on Social Work Education’s Educational Policy and Accreditation Standards.

  • The human services agencies and clients in the state, the region, the nation, and the globe; and

  • The land-grant oriented mission and goals of Colorado State University.

Position Summary

Human-Animal Bond in Colorado ( HABIC ) is a center in the Colorado State University’s School of Social Work sponsoring animal therapy programs, education, and research to explore and advance the benefits of the human-animal bond. The Community Outreach Coordinator will serve as a leader, using motivational and inspirational skill sets, for developing relationships with both volunteers and agency partners to join HABIC in our mission of Improving the quality of life for people of all ages through the therapeutic benefits of companion animals.

This position reports to the Director of HABIC . Candidates must be able to work a regular (full-time or part-time) schedule, with occasional evening and weekend hours as required.

Required Job Qualifications

  • By start date, completed bachelor’s degree in business, education, social work, human development, or a related field.

  • Minimum 2 years’ professional experience

  • Demonstrated ability to maintain collaborative professional relationships.

  • Demonstrated experience in volunteer coordination, including volunteer recruitment, volunteer placement, and volunteer recognition programs.

  • Proven track record of excellent leadership, organizational, communication, and listening skills.

  • Proven ability to work successfully with diverse populations and demonstrated commitment to promote and enhance diversity and inclusion.

Preferred Job Qualifications

  • Master’s degree

  • Strong organizational skills

  • Ability to work on multiple priorities

  • Develop, track, and implement multiple projects simultaneously, and meet timelines.

  • Experience working with others to create and/or implement guidelines, rules, and policies.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Volgistics volunteer database application

  • Previous experience with human animal bond organizations.

Job Duty CategoryVolunteer Coordination

Duty/Responsibility

  • Recruit volunteers through marketing outreach programs administered in collaboration with HABIC staff.

  • Collaborate with HABICs animal trainer to arrange shadowing opportunities for teams in training to experience HABIC volunteering opportunities in person.

  • Coordinate support for volunteers in new placements

  • Maintain relationships with active volunteers to ensure volunteer satisfaction and continued engagement with HABIC

  • Provide support and direction to enable volunteer committees to accomplish specific functions, such as evaluating volunteer skills and mentoring new volunteers.

Duty/Responsibility

  • Coordinate with partner agencies such as nursing homes and schools, to ensure HABIC volunteers are placed correctly for the fulfillment of our mission.

  • Review new partner agency requests, tour new agencies, coordinate agency agreements, and manage waiting list.

  • Maintain relationships with partner agency staff, forming strong working partnerships among a diverse group of organizations.

  • Maintain accurate partner agency records using Volgistics.

  • Coordinate HABIC human-animal interaction events program: plan schedule, recruit volunteers, manage events calendar, and oversee event assistants.

  • Provide support for HABIC educational presentation events: collaborate with HABIC staff for scheduling and recruit volunteer teams as needed.

  • Participate in community outreach events: assist in representing HABIC with information and resources about our mission and opportunities for volunteering.
