Department Summary

Information Services (IS) is the central information technology unit at the University of Oregon and provides wide ranging services to campus. Information Services consists of four major functional areas: Customer Experience, which serves as the key contact point for interactions with campus clients and customers; Applications & Middleware, which manages and supports applications, integration services, identity management and data management; Information Security, which helps protect virtual or physical information; and Technology Infrastructure, which provides administration and support for the software, hardware, and services needed to support the campus IT environment. Information Services also includes the Advanced Network Technology Center. IS works closely with the Network for Education and Research in Oregon.

Position Summary

This Operating Systems and Network Analyst 2 position reports to the Manager of User Support Services (USS) and utilizes a service ticketing system to provide analysis, administration, and Tier 2 and Tier 3 systems and server support for research and outreach and academic departments across the campus community. Using a broad knowledge of technology, cyber security, and an understanding of the unique computing requirements of grant-funded research, this position proactively plans server maintenance schedules, devises automation, coordinates meetings with stakeholders on and off campus, and attentively interprets new service requests, evaluating them for action, escalation, or assignment to other IT groups or service owners. This position is an effective communicator and active learner, who recognizes the value of writing and maintaining technical documentation, is practiced in reprioritization to manage dynamic technology requirements, and who is resourceful in coordinating and collaborating with other Information Services staff on campus.

Duties include the provisioning, maintenance, and troubleshooting of servers, desktop computers and peripherals, network interfaces, operating systems, productivity and enterprise applications, virtual machine implementation, backup solutions, and cloud storage. This position is expected to serve as a technical resource and liaison when communicating with customers to recognize, track, report, and resolve problems. This may also include assessing the performance of current systems, evaluating new products, resolving non-routine problems, and translating technical information to non-technical users. Interactions and contacts occur daily while performing work and responding to emergencies. This position works as a member of a team but routinely performs tasks independently, considers multiple solutions, and effectively sets priorities to respond to customer needs.

Essential Personnel

This position may provide essential services during times of emergencies and inclement weather. This position may be required to fulfill essential services and functions during these times.

Minimum Requirements

• This classification requires a solid foundation of knowledge in operating systems programs, maintenance, systems administration, and network systems that would normally be obtained through a bachelor's degree, preferably in computer science, engineering, mathematics, telecommunications or a related technical field, or equivalent technical training and/or experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience supporting end-users in a higher education environment.

• Experience with core Windows Server roles, including file sharing, Active Directory, and Group Policy.

• Experience with Linux server configuration, security, and maintenance.

• Experience with scripting, including PowerShell, Bash, or similar languages.

• Experience with enterprise device management tools such as SCCM and JAMF.

• Experience or familiarity with grant-funded research technology requirements, including secure file storage, access to sensitive data, and/or HIPAA regulations and best security practices.
