Department Summary

The Division of Equity and Inclusion (DEI) works to build capacity for UO’s global leadership around policies, practices, and programs for equity, inclusion, and diversity. DEI promotes inclusive excellence by working to ensure equitable access to opportunities, benefits, and resources through engagement with the campus and the community. As a part of our efforts, we design and implement campus-wide programs to recruit and retain a diverse community of students, staff, and community partners.

Located in the Erb Memorial Union (EMU), the MCC is the home to nearly 30 different student unions and organizations of the Associated Students of the University of Oregon (ASUO) and is funded by ASUO through incidental fees. The MCC is a unit of DEI, which places a premium on student success by promoting inclusive excellence and ensuring equitable access to opportunities, benefits, and resources for all members of campus, particularly students. Other units in DEI include the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence (CMAE), the Center for Diversity and Community (CoDaC), Campus and Community Engagement (CaCE), and the Office of the Vice President for Equity and Inclusion (VPEI).

The MCC has traditionally served as a hub of activism, connecting students of all races and backgrounds to collaborate around diversity programming and education. The MCC provides space for both formal and informal gatherings, hosts meetings of student unions, provides timely educational and cultural workshops, collaborates around regional conferences, hosts guest speakers and artists, welcomes visiting high school students and student groups; and supports university cultural heritage month programming. The MCC is at the core of fulfilling the university’s mission of student success. The MCC aims to model, promote, and reinforce an environment where students feel a sense of belonging and experience the university as a community committed to their success, health, and well-being.

Position Summary

The Multicultural Center (MCC) Program Advisor is a full-time position within the Division of Equity and Inclusion (DEI), responsible for providing leadership, vision, and programmatic oversight to the MCC. The Program Advisor supports the near 30 student union organizations affiliated with the MCC as well as all of the student leaders affiliated by serving as an advocate, advisor, and educator on key issues pertinent to its mission and services. The Program Advisor collaborates with other DEI staff to establish and engage in mutually-supportive relationships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community partners.

The Program Advisor is responsible for leading student-facing components of the University’s diversity framework (IDEAL and LACE) by facilitating the implementation of educational programs for students and unions within and outside the MCC, and working to promote the best possible educational environment for all students, particularly those underserved and underrepresented at the UO.

The Program Advisor, a part of the DEI team, reports directly to the Assistant Vice President for Campus and Community Engagement (AVP CaCE), and directly hires, trains, and supervises MCC student staff. The Program Advisor is also responsible for developing the MCC’s annual budget, as well as management and oversight of the MCC’s finances and IT needs. The Program Advisor also attends CMAE staff meetings to synergize the work of MCC with other DEI student-facing units.

The Program Advisor will have an opportunity to engage a broad group of stakeholders to reevaluate the MCC’s mission amidst a changing social climate and fiscal backdrop, requiring a new model of leadership and support for underrepresented and underserved students at the UO.
