Department Summary

The Division of Student Life supports the University’s academic mission through comprehensive programs and services that promote and advance student learning and success while fostering an inclusive and vibrant campus community. Student Life includes four departments, the University Career Center, Office of the Dean of Students, Erb Memorial Union, and Physical Education & Recreation, and a number of key programs, including the Holden Center for Leadership and Community Engagement, Parent and Family Programs, Major Student Events (Commencement, Homecoming, University Day), Student Engagement & Success (Student Government), Student Conduct and Community Standards, and Support for Students in Crisis and Students of Concern.

The Office of the Vice President for Student Life provides the vision for and oversight of the Division’s departments, programs, and initiatives. The Vice President’s administrative staff provides key administrative, strategic, financial, human resources and campus-wide student support.

Position Summary

The Major Student Events Coordinator assists the Major Student Events Manager with event implementation including the coordination of high-quality campus and division-wide special events that serve to enhance the student experience and further the University and Division’s image among its primary stakeholders. This position will assist with all aspects of event planning and management for campus-wide events such as Commencement, Homecoming, and University Day. Division-wide events include the annual Student Life Breakfast, Summer Social and others. In addition, this position will assist with event support, when needed, for units such as Parent and Family Programs. This position is responsible for the training and management of up to four student employees.

Minimum Requirements

• Two years of experience as an administrative specialist or executive support specialist which included administrative support for a project, program, or operation. Administrative support includes those duties beyond clerical/secretarial such as: interpretation of laws, rules, and regulations; administrative data collection and analysis; and evaluation of projects, processes, and operations; OR

• An equivalent combination of training and experience.

One year of postsecondary education may be substituted for up to one year of the experience.

• Demonstrated success working collaboratively as well as independently with the ability to exercise sound judgment and initiative in prioritizing and multitasking in a fast-paced environment.

• Demonstrated high level of confidence in making strategic decisions and using analytical skills to identify problems and develop immediate and innovative solutions, including resourcefulness for substitutions and adjustments in unplanned situations.

Preferred Qualifications

• Two years of demonstrated experience in event planning, execution, and evaluation, including organizing, planning, and directing both small and large-scale events.

• Experience working in higher education or similar institution/setting.

• Experience supervising student employees.

• Bachelor’s degree.
