Department Summary

The Division of Global Engagement (DGE) works to make the University of Oregon a more global university. In 21st century higher education, international engagement is not an optional extra: as noted in UO's Academic Plan, it is a core mission, essential to a thriving, socially salient, intellectually robust, academic community. It is part of the normal functioning of every school, college, department, and center. DGE works to support and integrate the wide range of international engagements, global-scale projects, and transnational partnerships launched and maintained in our many academic units. Units within DGE consist of International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS), Global Education Oregon (GEO), and the Global Studies Institute (GSI).

Position Summary

The Finance Director (FD) will serve as the Division of Global Engagement’s principal accounting officer, providing both direct support and direct management of all fiscal functions. As the Finance Director, you will provide oversight at the transaction detail level of financial operations and be responsible for ethical and efficient handling of all financial transactions in compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, University, and state regulations.

As the next Finance Director, you will be reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost for Global Engagement (AVP) and will work independently with the Dean and Vice Provost and members of unit leadership to manage financial operations and anticipate problems. This includes providing financial guidance and support for staff at all levels within each component unit of DGE and working with unit and divisional leadership to oversee financial planning and analysis. You will collaborate closely with GEO’s Finance and Operations Manager and other staff working on financial and related functions.

You will have level 2 signature authority for purchases and PSCs up to $25,000. At the direction of DGE leadership, you will have unlimited budget authority for unit funds, authorize travel expenditures, and have authority to authorize expenditures from all UO Foundation accounts associated with the Division of Global Engagement when directed to do so by unit or divisional leadership. Minimum Requirements

• Graduate degree in relevant field; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience;

• 5 years of progressive experience in accounting, auditing, financial projections, reporting, or financial operations.

• Ability to interpret and apply financial policies as well as create efficient processes to support financial and program goals.

• Effective communication skills, especially the ability to communicate complex financial information to others with varying levels of knowledge about fiscal matters.

• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills with proven ability to strategize, prioritize, and multi-task to meet goals and deadlines.

• Strong interpersonal skills sufficient to work effectively with staff, faculty, students, alumni, and other stakeholders. This includes professionalism and collegiality in a team environment, excellent judgment, discretion, and the ability to make decisions in a timely manner.

• Ability to use strong interpersonal and communication skills positively to engage people from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, as well as supervise a culturally diverse workforce and create effective networks for problem-solving and positive change.

• Ability to manage and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.

• Ability to diagnose operational problems and execute effective courses of action.

• Ability to evaluate and reconcile complex financial data to arrive at accurate conclusions and recommendations; review and verify the accuracy of financial data and information.

• Ability to work accurately with multiple international currencies and contracts, familiarity with international currency exchange rate processes and methodologies for monitoring and forecasting currency rates.

Preferred Qualifications

• 2 years’ experience managing foreign currency and accounting for foreign entities.

• Experience in leadership and management of financial operations of a complex organization.

• Experience with intercompany accounting for multiple legal entities.

• Experience in the public sector or in an institution of higher education.

• Proficiency with Smartsheet, StudioAbroad, and/or Banner databases.

• Experience interpreting and applying laws, rules, regulations, and ordinances within complex guidelines, such as fund accounting rules and university policies.

• Significant international experience through study, employment, or residence abroad.

• Proficiency in a language other than English.

• Advanced proficiency with spreadsheet applications such as Excel, Smartsheet, and database applications such as StudioAbroad and Banner, including experience collecting, analyzing, and accurately reporting data.
