Department Summary

It is the mission of Student Orientation Programs to introduce new and prospective students and their families to the university’s intellectual climate. In addition, we seek to improve the quality of the new student experience by providing assistance with academic, personal, and social adjustment to the university, demonstrating the University of Oregon’s commitment to teaching, learning, and scholarship.

Through recruitment programs such as the Ambassador Program, Duck Preview, and Duck Days and orientation and transition events such as IntroDUCKtion, Oregon Migrations, Week of Welcome, and the Welcome to the Flock series, Student Orientation Programs serves approximately 100,000 visitors, prospective students, new students, and families. Additionally, through the Department's outreach efforts, more than 100,000 Oregonians learn about the University through community-based festivals, events, and educational programs throughout the state of Oregon.

The department employs nearly 150 student staff each year, fostering skill and experience development, in an ongoing student development effort. Department staff and students conduct their work in a fast-paced, dynamic, highly collaborative environment in a variety of settings.

Position Summary

The essential function of the Coordinator for Transition Programs is to supervise a growing student staff dedicated to transfer student recruitment, orientation, and transition. The Coordinator serves in a leadership role in transfer student IntroDUCKtion events, transition activities, and assessment. The position coordinates Oregon Migration, Week of Welcome events, and Winter Warm-Up events and will reactivate the Week of Welcome student volunteer program to support signature events.

This Coordinator will have a significant impact on the orientation and transition of students at the University by redesigning, maintaining, and assessing online community courses each term in collaboration with partner offices. The Coordinator supports programs and services that connect students to the University using intentional student development and enrollment transition theories. In addition, the Coordinator plays an integral role in the development of students employed within Student Orientation Programs; supervision and advising of student staff includes staff development and evaluation. The position will provide staffing and logistical support for mid-year orientation programs and provide staffing support as needed for first-year, in-person IntroDUCKtion events.

This position supervises 30-35 student employees; 60% of the incumbent’s time will be devoted to student supervision. The Coordinator will plan, assign, and approve work, address and carry out performance issues, respond to grievances, prepare and complete evaluations, and hire/terminate student employees.

Minimum Requirements

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of skills, experience, and education.

• Two years’ experience hiring, training, and supervising student employees.

• Two years’ work experience in higher education administration, enrollment management, student affairs, or a related field. Graduate-level work applies.

Preferred Qualifications

• Master’s degree in higher education administration, student affairs, or a related field.

• Experience with undergraduate orientation, transition, and retention programs.

• Demonstrated experience enhancing student retention.

• Spanish language skills desired.
